The Merrimack Valley Universalist conference met at the First Universalist church with Rev. H. S. Fiske giving welcomes in the pastor's absence. Rev. W. E. Gibbs, D. D., of Amesbury delivered the opening address on Acts iv 19, urging devotion and use of God given talents. The gathering, with seating for 275 at the vestry, adjourned for dinner.
The Primary School Teachers association circulated a remonstrance against a pending retiring fund bill. About 150 Lowell teachers signed, with more names possible. They argue the bill takes part of salaries without consent and is inequitable, and claim it assumes teachers cannot manage their own affairs. The remonstrance will be sent to the Legislature.
George T. Butler was re-elected to the Pelham school committee for three years and to the treasurer post at yesterday's school meeting. Charles W. Hobbs was chosen moderator.
Nashua March 18 Hon David Arthur Taggart of Concord was named receiver of the Granite State Provident association. His bond is set at 100000 dollars. Only five percent of the companys business is in New Hampshire. First mortgages totaling 300000 dollars are due this year.
In Peoria Illinois on March 18 three alarms were rung between 12 and 2 pm. The Hutchinson cooperage works the largest in the city suffered a disastrous blaze. Soon after, a fire at the Manhattan distillery and another at the cooperage of Madigan Walsh & Co. broke out. All three fires were separate yet nearby and investigators suspect planned arson. The losses are expected to be very heavy.
Cincinnati March 18 At 10 o'clock last night a man was seen to fall or jump from a river barge at the foot of Bagmiller street. The body was recovered and identified as Rev. Fr. M. Robinson who arrived in the city six weeks ago and taught at St. Joseph's College. Whether death was by his own act or accident remains unknown.
O C P Appleby was arrested in New Orleans by U S post office officials on charges of fraudulent mail use. Complaints from about six cities accuse him of sending circulars overseas claiming inside information on land values and taking money from victims.
San Francisco reports the church council finished its inquiry into Rev Dr Brown. The panel found him not guilty of immorality though it cited unministerial conduct. The committee’s verdict is described as a complete vindication.
Massachusetts residents complain about milk from Portsmouth area sent to Lynn. Starting May 1 producers must provide evidence the milk comes from healthy cows. Tuberculin tests will govern results. Healthy animals must wear ear tags and have health certificates.
University chatter swirls after Tuesday defacing at the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge. Officials say the damage is severe as red paint soaks into soft limestone, requiring possible stone cutting to repair.
Money deposited in the savings department of Traders National Bank at 30 Middlesex Street and 11 Post Office Avenue on or before Friday April third will earn four percent interest per year from April first. Interest may be withdrawn or added to principal on July first and January first. Bank hours: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, Saturdays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. William F. Hills, Cashier.

The Bachelor club met Tuesday night and elected President George Macdonald, Vice President A. G. McCurdy, Recording Secretary Melrose C. ter, Financial Secretary Melrose C. Titus, Treasurer Fred H. Cole, and an executive committee of G. E. Titus, William Robinson, and Fred G. Salmon. Rev. Dr. J. M. Pullman of Lynn declined the call to the Universalist church in Brooklyn.
Governor McKinley sharply defended his currency position after critics charged the Ohio platform favored silver too much and gold too little. He cited Congressional records showing support for equal power and usage of gold and silver, stressing money must be interchangeable and sound in value. He avoided new comments on current money supply while confirming a fiscally conservative Republican approach.
A liquor law committee bill to move all license fees to the state treasury and abolish city tax on licenses drew sharp opposition from city officials in Lowell and Boston. The half yearly meeting of the Kirk Street Y. P. S. C. E. was held Tuesday night and the following officers were elected: President Miss Mabel B. Corey, vice president Elmore W. Webster, secretary Miss Lottie Dempsey, treasurer Arthur Wright, corresponding secretary Miss Belle F Batch elder.
After a late streets committee session Alderman Flemings presided as the panel rejected a rotary crusher. The committee favored Wright’s American Stone Crusher bid and voted 4 to 1 to accept it for 3369 dollars, with delivery in 60 days. Salem street site chosen for installation near the lodge.

A free entertainment last night in the chapel featured Miss Maud McCrae and Mr. J A Baker directing a program that drew nearly three hundred. The Wigginville school pupils under Mr Baker sang, young pupils performed solos and duets, William Midgeley Jackson and others gave solos, Miss McCrae Etta Smith John Robertshaw and others recited, and five young misses staged a dialogue. Rev O E Mallory will preach Thursday evening. The newly formed choir will rehearse next Monday at the Ramsdens Harrison Street.
The Young Women's Christian Association opens a week of Bible readings led by Mr Needham with the tabernacle as a type of Christ. Today the Brazen Altar and Laver are the subject. Open to all. bring Bibles. Quarterly association meeting is set for tomorrow at 7 45 with reports, Scotch selections, solos, and refreshments to follow.
D C Lesters Little People danced at the Highlands hall for the first annual reception with about fifty children and as many parents. The event featured butterfly outfits for the girls, color restrictions for boys, a marching circle waltz and several dances. Dancer progress impressed spectators as beginners not long ago. Mr. Lester led with aides Fred Wilcox Albert Morton Fred Russell John Davis Percy Cuttle and Edward Abbott.
The Gaiety Club held a trolley party to the Thomas Talbot memorial hall in North Billerica last night. A grand march led by John J. Pinder featured 50 dancing couples. The event included old nine-pin dances and intermission songs by Arthur Mills, Thomas Moylan, Michael Kennedy, and Mary A. Miller. Officers listed: P J Weston as general manager, John J. Pinder floor director, aids Thomas Moylan Anthony Cunningham and W J Smith.
The Middlesex Mechanics association is summoned as respondent to a creditor petition in the Cambridge court of insolvency. The April 23 date marks the proceedings for a $400 coal bill claim. A keeper remains at the Dutton street building due to another pending claim.
Four candidates were initiated into the Flora E Stacy lodge I G T in the Bay State hall last night. Four applications for membership were also received.
