It notes British colonies vastly larger than the United Kingdom and urban population share in British India.
Sixty producers from Northboro Shrewsbury Westboro Grafton Holden Worcester Auburn Paxton and Boylston met in Shrewsbury town hall to confirm a 27 cent per can summer milk price. President Romeo E. Allen presided while George H. Johnson urged a pre month mobilization with a banner No milk unless you say 26 cents a can. A. D. Perry suggested funding a canvass to press the war against contractors and peddlers.
Ernest Metcalf, a Fitchburg division fireman for Boston and Maine, escaped death when his head struck a truss on the Tin bridge near West Fitchburg station. He suffered a scalp wound, hip injuries, and internal damage, and was taken to Burbank hospital. Metcalf, 25, unmarried, is in serious but stable condition after the moderate-speed accident.

It advertises safety deposit boxes in its savings department with 4 percent per annum compounded semiannually. Banking hours listed as 8 A M to 4 P M weekdays and Saturdays 8 A M to 1 P M. Lincoln March 16 Nebraska militiamen guarding the state penitentiary thwarted an escape by twelve convicts who began at the cell house floor and climbed toward the roof through a ventilator after sawing iron grating. They peered over the roof to the road below but returned to the cell floor rather than meet guards.
Boston March 16 debris removal starts after last night fire at the Morning Advertiser the interior is ruined with an estimated 150000 loss. Three linotype machines were lost though presses are undamaged the paper will print on the Globe plant today. The Advertiser notes with sorrow the deaths of three staff members in the smoke and chapels held special meetings with resolutions.
Washington reports Lieutenant General Mariana Trias, the insurgent army’s lone general, surrendered with nine officers and 200 well armed men at San Francisco de Malabon on March 16. He took the oath of allegiance, signaling the high point of the rebellion and matching Aguinaldo in prestige in southern Luzon. General Bates and Colonel Baldwin are credited with securing the surrender.
Secretary of War Root issued an order defining the standard flag for the headquarters division in the Philippines. The khaki silk or bunting flag is swallow tailed and features two overlapping red circles bordered in white and edged in blue at the center.
Hazleton Pa March 16 Not one of the presidents of the nine coal carrying railroads came to Hazleton today in response to President Mitchells telegram demanding their presence at a joint conference. The convention is in executive session.
Natick Massachusetts trustees of the Five Cent Savings bank posted notices showing a surplus of 168092 dollars and cash on hand of 73347 dollars. The run on the bank continued this morning but is expected to end today as calm returns.
Paris reports Castellane unharmed in a duel with De Rodays who was wounded in the thigh at the first exchange. The contest ended with no further injuries as the shots ceased. In Lancaster a.m., Congressman Marriott Brosius died at his home after an attack of apoplexy the previous day.
Fifteen hundred Italian immigrants arrived today on the Red Star liner Kensington and the North German Lloyd liner Kaiser in March Teresa. Thompson Hardware offers bicycle repairs claiming quality work. Colds can worsen into serious illness. Dr Wood's Norway Pine helps for cold symptoms.
At noon today clerk Joseph Smith closed the books on 152 applications to sell liquor in Lowell for the coming year beginning May 1. The list includes many renewals and new names including George Gardiner and James P. McDonald. Street locations favored are Lakeview avenue and Broadway, with warnings that granting all on those streets could leave every other house as a saloon. The roster lists numerous firms and individuals seeking COMMON VICTUALLERS licenses, with addresses across Merrimack, Gorham, Market, and nearby streets. Continued on page seven.
Miss Laura Clark discharged after councilman Dugdale withdrew charges amid a settlement talks led by William Hogan. The case drew heavy attention due to government ties and alleged inconsistencies in the money loss timing. Meanwhile Ana Britton pleaded guilty to a small theft. others faced fines or minor charges as the court cleared several drunkenness and larceny matters.
The special committee on Lowell garbage disposal held its first meeting at city hall with Councilman Clark presiding. Members Miskella Mulllin Legare Holbrook and McGuinness discussed whether to replace the aging cremator, methods of swill collection and feeding to cattle, costs for a new cremator and ongoing disposal, and the potential to burn or render waste to protect public health.
The Lowell Democratic City Committee held a Friday meeting to amend bylaws and hear charges of party disloyalty against seven city council Democrats who voted for a Republican for principal assessor of taxes. A hearing was set for Thursday evening, March 21, with charges naming James B. Casey, Michael J. Markham, Timothy Donohoe, Patrick O Rourke, Peter Daily, John H. Spillane, and George B. Roach.
Tremont and Suffolk begin construction of a wooden storehouse for cotton on Tanner Street. The 128 by 96 foot structure, funded by contractor W. H. Wiggin, will be finished in under a month with 30 to 49 men at work. In other news, Miss Carrie Green of 98 West 6th Street was honored with a surprise party hosted by friends and schoolmates featuring piano solos by Miss Etta La Rue and Miss Green, with a diamond ring presented to Edythe Mills.
The annual meeting of Bigelow Carpet Company was held in Boston on the 13th. The old board of officers was reelected with Matthew C. Skilton as Clerk and Charles F. Fairbanks as Treasurer. Directors named include James H. Beal Edward W. Hutchins Arthur T. Lyman president Jacob Rogers John Sloane Alexander S. Wheeler.
Mr and Mrs George R Fox were honored at their East Dracut home last evening by a large gathering of friends. Hutchinsons orchestra provided music, a dainty lunch was served, and Rev F L Kelley presented Mr Fox with a roll top desk while Mrs Fox received a fine lamp. The couple thanked guests warmly as the party ended.
