Advices from Skaguay report Col. Anderson, commanding Alaska troops, has effectively placed the town under martial law to remove gamblers and confidence men. He ordered saloons and dance halls closed as about one hundred gamblers depart the city.
Edna Wallace Hopper sues De Wolf Hopper in San Francisco for absolute divorce on grounds of wilful desertion and failure to provide the operatic star. The suit was filed March 16 with the case citing marital breakdown and abandonment.
Mrs Martha Parker, 75, wife of Charles Parker, residing on Otis Street, Kittery, was badly burned while clearing rubbish with a small bonfire in her yard. The flames caught her clothing as she attempted to extinguish them with a wet broom. Neighbors and Mrs Walter Ball aided her before Dr Jenkins arrived. She suffered facial chest and left side burns and convulsions with shock. recovery considered unlikely due to age.
New York on March 15 two more victims of the Bowery lodging house fire were identified at the morgue. Body No 11 is Charles Schaeffer a waiter and body No 10 is Richard Hensen the house watchman. Mrs Phillips, a workhouse prisoner, partly identified as husband Charles F Phillips body No 8. Four bodies are positively identified, four doubtful and three unknown.

Chagnon and Chagnon had assault and battery charges on Harry Bellon continued.
The funeral of Henry K. Ferrin was held yesterday from 1515 Middlesex street with Rev. Smith T. Ford officiating and the Highland quartet singing. Bearers included Judge Samuel P. Hadley and others. burial at Edson cemetery. C. M. Young & Co. in charge. The funeral of Elizabeth Dobson followed at her son George A.’s home on 178 Pleasant Street with Rev. Mr. Craig officiating. Miss Florence Hovey and Fred Blodgett sang. bearers named. burial at Edson Cemetery. C. M. Young & Co. in charge.
The fifth annual meeting of the Lower District Massachusetts Sunday School Association opened at St Paul’s Church. Rev. Stratton gave the welcome, Acting President Kimball responded, and Williams reported. Committees were named, Pillsbury spoke, a basket lunch was shared, with afternoon and evening sessions planned.
In Cambridge Superior Court yesterday Paul Capdeville, a Black defendant, was sentenced to four to five years in state prison after conviction for the Parker diamond robbery.
Patrick Kennedy aged 16 succumbed to injuries at St. John’s hospital after being thrown from his team in a runaway yesterday. He resided at 10 Merrill’s court.

Chattanooga March 15 The Dayton Coal and Tron company at Dayton Tennessee announces a ten percent wage rise for its 1100 miners beginning the first of next month. Other laborers have seen wage boosts from 12 to 15 percent.
Mary L Cummings of North Brookfield Massachusetts reports catarrh of the stomach improved after taking Hood’s Sarsaparilla. The Common Council discussed the Assessors investigation and resisted a nonconcurrence on paving Gorham street with local labor. Granting transfers to Bartlett and Carter street schools drew dispute about unpaid bills and last year’s takings. Members pressed for faster inquiry while defending committees and school construction practices.
In Lowell last night at about 10:25 PM, Achille La Belle intervened at his children’s boarding house over a new lodger. He was assaulted by his own children with bed planks and other objects, suffering a scalp wound needing stitches. Officers arrived in time to prevent murder and La Belle was arrested for drunkenness. he faces court in the morning. M. A. Baird announces spring millinery stock in New York.
A solemn mass at the Immaculate Conception church marked a month since the Maine disaster. Fr Joyce urged Catholic duty and national unity as children and parishioners observed with flags, a catafalque, and Gregorian chant for the sailors who died heroically at their posts.
