Donaldsonville La March 13 tense excitement prevails as advices warn of an impending break in the Arlington levee near Baton Rouge. Hundreds of plantation men are being sent to the scene on a special train while sand and workers rush to Arlington to avert flooding of New River parish sugar lands and disrupt rail traffic.
A Tucson to Potam stage was ambushed by Mexican bandits on the Yaqui River in Sonora. All six passengers and the driver were killed, including ranch owner Filiberto Alvarado, his two young companions Julia Berdo and C H de Gonzales, while gunfire shattered the cover and horses ran free. Authorities believe bandits from the mountains carried out the attack and suspect Alvarado was targeted for money.
The body found in the woods at Tewksbury Sunday could not be identified by witnesses. The burial took place Thursday in Centre cemetery with Rev. J. H. Yeoman conducting. A description was sent to Mrs. Omrod of Fall River, who reported her husband disappeared Dec 30, but the description did not match.
Mrs Seth Paine of Buffalo arriving in Batavia to consult attorney William H Webster on advice regarding her possible appearance at the Burdick inquest. Detective Holmlund remains in Batavia and has a subpoena for Mrs Paine to testify.
Rev. Philip F. Sexton of the Boston archdiocese is assigned back to Star of the Sea Beverly after nearly two decades away. Ordained in 1881, he has served in Jamaica Plain Malden Roslindale Merrimack and Newbury before this transfer. He begins duties at once and is noted for interest in Beverly affairs. Also Rev. J L Levesque moves from St John the Baptist Lynn to Immaculate Conception Newburyport where he has served as curate.
George Sawter, recently named United States consul at Guayaquil, fled the city aboard the Alliance from Colon, citing a deadly yellow fever outbreak and worsening conditions after rain. His wife accompanied him, and he recalled the high death rate, noting the dangers to both of them. President Roosevelt sent Sawter's nomination to the Senate for an assistant appraiser post at the New York port.
Seattle dated March 13 Maj Bing ham of the quartermaster department will call for bids for government passenger and freight transport to Alaska during the open season of 1903. Bids must cover shipments from Seattle or Tacoma. Most work involves Alaska military logistics for posts including Fort Vis, St Michael, Egbert, Liscum, and a new post on Lynn Canal.
Stockholm Sweden March 13 The famine relief committee reports total subscriptions of about 258000 dollars with 85000 dollars sent from America.
The late Edwin L. Burdick's will, made December 8, 1892, cuts off his wife entirely as he faced divorce and awards $2500 to relatives with the rest to his three children. Executors are Augustus B. Kellogg, George H. Dunston, and George C. Miller. Guardians are Charles Parke and Risley Tucker. The will was filed for probate in Buffalo with a local inquest to follow, while valuing estate at $1400 plus real property. The filing notes lack of legal aid in drafting the will and lists heirs at law including widow Alice E. Burdick and children Marion, Carroll Lewis, and Alice Hull Burdick. Subpoenas were issued for inquest proceedings in Buffalo.
Amateurs stage a springtime walkout at Bigelow Carpet mills with about half of the creelers out. Sixty five thousand dollars of Hawaiian money has been sent from the United States sub treas ury to the local mint for melting and re coinage. The process starts immediately with the first consignment and more island money is expected as the gob treasury holds two hundred thousand dollars toward a million. Every steamer from Honolulu is anticipated to bring additional Ha waiian coinage for conversion into United States money.
New York March 13 The steamer New Hampshire of the Stonington line today ran down a Long Island railroad float off Williamsburg carrying 14 loaded freight cars. The impact broke some cars and light freight floated down the river.
Water levels climbed from 6 feet 2 1/2 inches to 6 feet 6 inches on the dam as a heat wave melted snow upstream. Observers say the rise may continue but a serious freshet is not expected here, though concord and up-country towns report higher flows. Officials note the river can accommodate about two more feet of rise without major trouble.
The Merrimack River at Concord rises rapidly with Sewall's Falls dam at eight feet six inches and climbing. Last year's record was within a foot. East Concord sees the river spilling over banks, flooding the Boston and Maine railroad tracks and causing trouble.
Nashua New Hampshire March 13 rising Nashua river threatens nearby property. River has risen six inches with five more inches likely to flood the Jackson Cotton Mill basement. Flooding could force 1800 workers from their jobs at the plant.
Millbury selectmen grant a franchise to Millbury Singletary Lake and West Millbury Street Railway to build a two mile line from West Millbury to Millbury Centre Town Hall. The line aims to develop Singletary Lake as a summer resort, with a $15000 capital. Freight and express services planned, cars to connect with Worcester and Providence lines.
Prof Barula zoologist with three companions from Baron Toll expedition arrived in Irkutsk after leaving the yacht Sarla in May to study New Siberia. The Toll party, exploring the Siberian coastline, was cut off by ice earlier, prompting the imperial academy to dispatch an expert on Feb 21 to locate Baron Toll and his associates.
In police court this morning Henry Rubloff alias W M Harris faced multiple larceny complaints tied to forged insurance agent activity. Judge Hadley postponed to March 20 with $500 bail after noting Rubloff, 20, an articulate, educated youth, seemed pathetically outmatched by the charges. Other youths, Wilfred Coutu and Robert Caisse, received probation and reform school settings respectively, amid a string of alcohol and minor offenses including drunks and non support cases.
Augusta Maine March 13 The Maine Senate opened with discussion on re submission of the prohibitory amendment led by Senator Staples of Knox and backed by Senator Stetson of Penobscot who urged recent conversion. In the House a Lewiston mayoral aldermen and councilmen election by plurality vote was proposed. A state printing label for the International Typographical Union and an initiative and referendum bill were introduced.
New York reports Lona Angela Espartero has died in a Lima hospital. She is identified as the daughter of Baldomero Espartero the celebrated Spanish general and Duke of Viztero, who signed the Vergara treaty with the Carlists and served as regent during Isabel II's minority.
San Francisco reports Wray Taylor, Hawaii agriculture and forestry commissioner, wanted on embezzlement charges, left Feb 11 ostensibly for Southern California but traveled via the Santa Fe route with baggage checked to New York. He handled funds totaling $163,000.
Despatches report the Emperor and Empress Dowager will visit the imperial mausoleum at Liliang and hold a grand army review at Pao Ting. About 20,000 troops from Chili, Henan, Shansi and Shensi will participate, led by Yuan Shih Kai who plans 50,000 new soldiers by April. Imperial forces suffer defeats against Kwang Si rebels while Hunan officials urge mobilization.
Dr. William P. Munn, former president of the Colorado State Medical Society and recently head of Denver’s board of health, died from hemorrhage of the lungs in Denver.
