William Carr a seven year old boy son of John Carr 201 Charles street slipped on the sidewalk in Lawrence street Friday afternoon while returning from school. Manila March 4 Dewey raised his flag aboard the Olympia and was saluted by forts foreign warships and all American ships at daylight. Rebels attempting to reinforce at Guadalupe faced shelling by a gunboat under heavy fire with heavy rebel losses and two Americans wounded one killed. Officers' wives nearby may land briefly. The Charleston and Baltimore arrived with civil members of the Philippines Commission and the Senator and Ohio transports brought troops.
In Washington on March 4 the Senate and House resumed sessions after a night carried by most members. Both chambers agreed to appropriations bills while the Pacific cable amendment failed. The Senate confirmed Col. Fred C. Ainsworth as chief of the record and pension office, and John Tweedle as assistant. N. A. Cram was named postmaster of Pittsfield New Hampshire. The President signed nearly all appropriation bills after two hours of signing. Walter Evans of Kentucky was nominated judge for the district court of Kentucky.
The Pittsfield express on the Danbury and Berkshire division of the New York New Haven and Hartford railroad broke a tender axle at Cannon station in Wilton Conn. The tender toppled and the combination car and smoker crashed into it. The baggage car was demolished. Several passengers and train staff sustained minor injuries. The same train had a December wreck at Georgetown.
Maria Letcher was shot and killed this morning in Lawrence by John Roberts in a jealous act. Three shots were fired. Roberts, who shared a home with the victim, was arrested. Both were 30 years old. The assault ends a troubled relationship and raises questions about motive.

A telegram from Lowell reports the death at Vinestreet Lynn of Patrick Roach father of Merrimack Print Works Assistant Superintendent Roach. An Irish native who moved to Lowell fifty years ago and then to Lynn fifteen years ago he suffered asthma and old age. Surviving relatives include his son in Lowell his widow two sons Charles and Edward Heffernan and daughters Kate Agnes Lizzie McCarthy age 40 of Lowell, with burial in Lowell after a funeral at 11 45 a m from the depot. A sister died in Malden about a month ago and was buried in Lowell.
The funeral of Mary Fleming was held at St Peter's church yesterday morning with Mass by Rev Fr Saunders. Bearers included Patrick Buckmaster William Buck master Patrick Murphy and Mr Eat on. Burial followed at St Patrick's cemetery under Undertaker Rogers supervision.

Molly Varnum chapter D A R held a meeting at Memorial hall with Superintendent Knowston of Chelmsford discussing Spanish Missions in California. Next meeting set for April 19. John Seede, high school class of '97 alum now at Taft's college, is dangerously ill. Wm F Courtney hopes to resume outings with April weather. W J Johnson and wife return from New York millinery trip. John S Jackson recovers from pleurisy. Edmund T Simpson sails for West Indies today.
Henry H Barnes age 83 died in the city on March 3. Funeral services will be from his home at 390 East Merrimack Street on Monday at 2:30 PM. Burial at private cemetery. Friends invited.
