Chicago March 2 The purchasing syndicate for the Chicago and Alton includes George Gould Jacob Schiff James Stillman and E H Harriman representing Rockefeller and the Vanderbilts. They plan $3 000 000 for property improvement and $2 000 000 to raise grades in Chicago with no further plans announced.
Senator Geo Gray of Delaware a Gold Democrat and Paris peace commission member signals willingness to accept a United States circuit judge appointment in the third judicial district covering New Jersey Pennsylvania and Delaware The appointment has been decided on and will be made soon.
New York March 2 indications say Kipling is much improved this morning as doctors rest since midnight. No bulletin issued except that two of Kipling's daughters Josephine six and Elsie three are seriously ill with pneumonia.
Holyoke March 2 stockholders of the Dean Steam Pump company vote to offer promoters of a proposed pump makers combine 2 percent shares for one. The company capitalizes at 400000 dollars. The proposal contemplates selling out for 900000 dollars.
Charles Milliken of Chelsea was found guilty of receiving bribes in the Scollans teaming fraud cases. He faces sentencing this afternoon.
Laura Browning a 30 year old woman driven to desperation by poverty poisoned her three children with laudanum and then killed herself in Portland on March 2. The act followed her declared insanity and left the children dead.
Hong Kong dispatch says the American Philippine commissioners departed today aboard the cruiser Baltimore bound for Manila. The delegation undertakes official duties with plans to reinforce U S governance in the Philippine archipelago during the voyage and arrival.

In the superior criminal court in East Cambridge yesterday the following Lowell cases were disposed of. F J Connolly for breaking and entering and committing larceny was sentenced to two years in the house of correction. The sentence to take place immediately upon the expiration of his present term at the state farm at Bridgewater for drunkenness. James F Walsh was sentenced to the Massachusetts reformatory for breaking and entering and committing larceny.
The Stationary Firemen's association held a lively meeting Tuesday night at Mechanics Bank in Lowell. J M Richward of the Dean Pump builders lectured on pumps inspirators and injectors, with routine business transacted. The young association grows, with three initiated and several propositions, and aims to affiliate with the international body spreading across the United States.

Funeral services for James F Roark Michael Boyle Eliza Jordan John Mathews Mrs Harriet Thornber were held at homes and churches with burial at Edson and Catholic cemeteries. Relatives, clergy and local organizations attended. Floral tributes and bearers named. Separately twenty four Hill electric workers struck after wage-cut threat.
