A still alarm at 12 35 this morning sent Engine 5 to Butler Smith's wood yard on Second avenue where a blaze had gained headway. Firemen quickly controlled the fire, with damages not exceeding $10. The fire was caused by a lamp upset by men in the place drinking from a black bottle. No insurance.
The Sun's claim of September deferral is incorrect the Fr McGrath memorial at the Church of the Immaculate Conception will start within a fortnight. Statuary ordered in Munich three weeks ago and on the way marble altar pedestal by Hall Moran of Boston contracted to build. If statues arrive on time the memorial will be blessed the first Friday in April.
The Holy Name Society of the church will collect extra funds to cover the more elaborate memorial than originally planned. This additional fundraising aims to meet the higher cost and honor the occasion with a fitting tribute.
Miss Maud Mountford of Lowell headlined a Saturday night entertainment at the Methodist church under the North league. She performed seven selections while Mrs J D Willman and Miss Sarah Butterworth provided strong support with encore after encore. Pupils Ettta May Dugdale and Elsie Anderson impressed as readers, and the ladies society organized the event, netting a neat sum despite a limited audience.
In Hadley court three drunks were fined one dollar each and Thomas E Deignan paid three dollars. Four youths William Golden John Sunderland John Riley and Charles Davis were arraigned for malicious mischief in Centralville with cases continued to March 4 bonds set at two hundred dollars. Charles A Forbes faced assault charges on his wife Nellie Forbes with case continued to April 1 bail unchanged. Joseph St Pierre charged with cattle malice was continued on two hundred dollar bonds to March 4. Hugh O Brien charged with drunkenness and assault and battery was fined three dollars and twelve dollars respectively.
The funeral proceeded Monday from his Collinsville home with a solemn requiem mass at St. Michael's Church. Rev Fr Scannell celebrated, aided by Frs O'Brien and Gilday, who also oversaw the grave service at the Catholic cemetery. Undertaker J J O'Donnell managed arrangements. bearers included Andrew Haley, John Haley, Thomas, Patrick, James McNamara and Peter Cavanaugh.
George L. Newhall formerly of Chelmsford died in Providence Rhode Island on Friday February 25 at about 78. He was the step father of Mrs Walter S. Simons of Chelmsford and was highly esteemed by locals acquainted with him.
