A 6 foot long, 3 foot diameter sea animal with a doglike head and silky hair was caught in a seine net off Keyport shore in Raritan bay by Capt. A. Walling on Thursday. The creature reportedly growls and has a tail with heavy fins. Nearby, a Texas hog is claimed as perhaps the largest living hog, weighing 1430 pounds and measuring 4 feet 1 inch tall with a 6 foot neck circumference. Additional items note French monopolies, tobacco leaf washing liquid sold by government tobacconists, a Paris fronted advertisement dispute over color reflection, and a giant telescope mirror being cast in Belgium for a Paris exhibition project aimed to bring the moon closer to Earth.
Money deposited in the Savings department at Traders National Bank locations on Middlesex Street and Post Office Avenue before 4 p m Friday July 3 will earn 4 percent annual interest from July 1. Interest may be withdrawn or added to the principal on July 1 and January 1. Bank hours are 8 a m to 4 p m and Saturdays 8 a m to 1 p m, and from 7 to 9 p m. Signed William F Hills cashier.
London June 30 The House of Commons sat through the night to discuss the agricultural land rating bill intended to reduce land taxes. The debate remained orderly until about 2 a.m. when exchanges grew sharper. The bill was reported to the House at 8 a.m. and the third reading is set for Wednesday.
President Cleveland left Washington at 7 this morning bound for Gray Gables. He traveled in a private car on the regular New York train along the Pennsylvania road, joined by Private Secretary Thurber. In Jersey City he boarded the yacht Oneida and will continue by water. Executive business will be conducted at Gray Gables with official announcements from the executive mansion.
In Henley on the Thames June 30 the weather hindered river work but all crews were out. The new English oars show a slight stick yet rowers favor the grip in the water and expect use in the race. The good feeling between English and Yale crews continues.
London reports a planned troops review at Aldershot camp to honor the Ancient and Honorable Artillery company of Boston. The date is not fixed yet, proposed by the Prince of Wales. The move is a compliment to Americans, previously extended mainly to crowned heads.
Baseball in Boston on June 29 reports Dolan pitching erratically and exiting in the fifth while Philadelphia hammered 13 runs on 14 hits. Thompson led Quakers with strong batting and Tenney stood out for Boston with solid all around play despite two Hamilton errors. Boston finished 6 runs on 8 hits with 3 errors. Philadelphia 13 runs on 14 hits with 3 errors.
New York defeated Brooklyn 5 to 2 in New York. Baltimore crushed Washington 16 to 3 in Baltimore. Pittsburg beat St Louis 8 in St Louis. Cleveland won 9 to 6 over Chicago in Chicago. Cincinnati routed Louisville 20 to 8 in Louisville.
Fall River defeats Pawtucket 17 to 1, New Bedford hosts Brockton 7 to 2, Bangor edges Lewiston 11 to 9, and Portland outlasts Rockland 26 to 25 in a set of league games.
A gathering of gold standard democrats in Indianapolis on June 29 drew prominent figures. The group voted to establish headquarters in Chicago during the convention, likely at the Palmer House, and pledged to welcome all gold standard supporters.
A Travers City dispatch says Burt Jameson and Will Armstrong left Old Mission in a sail boat Sunday and have not been heard from since. The steamer Onakanawa patrolled the bay with no result, and the young men are believed drowned.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception held a funeral for Thomas F. Farley with Rev. Philip J. Garrigan officiating and a male quartet, no flowers per family wish, then burial at Catholic cemetery. Also, funeral services for Rev. Michael Wynne began at St. Patrick's at 6 30 this morning with a requiem high mass, deacon and sub deacon named, and multiple clergy in attendance, followed by burial preparations in Manchester.
June 30 reports two drunks fined one dollar and ordered to surrender fifteen dollars or face four months in jail. Maurice Hanafin, a common drunkard, and Michael J. Graney receive jail terms for drunkenness and assault with Graney appealing. John J. Jones lies seriously injured at home from a suspected stone-throwing incident by John Smith. Smith’s case postponed to July 3. Jones guarded by a $1000 bond.

Chicago reports Joe Choynski and Peter Maher have been matched for a six round contest at Madison Square Garden in New York on July 27.
New York June 29 at City Line park saw Jack Downey of Brooklyn and Frank Erne of Buffalo contest a twelve round draw in a lightweight bout under the South Brooklyn Athletic club. Both weighed about 135 pounds and delivered a hot, evenly matched contest from start to finish.
Boston June 30 Dr. F S Baldwin chosen to fill the new chair of Economics at Boston University. Baldwin, age 26, is its youngest graduate having earned a Ph D after graduating from BU at 18.
At the Pittsburg league meeting John M Ward pleaded for the Rusi matter but failed. Corny Flynn’s civil suit leaves the board’s jurisdiction. The Tebeau case drew the most talk with a $200 fine for disorderly conduct and a ten day deadline to pay or face disqualification.
A Neosho despatch reports four Indians rode into Meol twenty four miles south of St Louis last night and robbed the town. No casualties are reported and the value of stolen property is unknown. The attackers fled.
Millville New Jersey reports scores of glass works closed for the summer idle 5000 employees. With resumption in fall expected, a demand for higher wages is anticipated amid the idle period.
Apropos of Yale trainer Murphy stating Wefers of Georgetown is faster than Pi per Donovan, backer C H Hoey doubles down. He’ll back Donovan against Wefers or any man in the world in three races 100 150 and 200 yards with $1000 a side in each race and a $1000 side bet offered to any taker.
This evening and tomorrow evening a novel programme will be presented at St John’s chapel for the choir boys benefit. Also featured is the laughable opera Diamond Cut Diamond with Miss Clifford and Mr Blunt performing multiple characters.
Tekamah Nebraska June 30 Misses Jessie Kelso Sadie Reese and John Sampson drowned in the Missouri river last night during a picnic when their boat swamped and rescuers arrived too late.
The civil service examination for foremen and sub foremen of the street department was held in the city hall this morning. Ten men appeared for the tests, with nine seeking foreman and one for sub foreman. The board of examiners including Co H Conant Dr J J Colton and Joseph Smith plus chief examiner Henry Sherwin conducted questions focused on sewer street and lodge work.
The American Watch company’s factory in Waltham is closed for its annual vacation. A few workers remain to finish up, and operations will resume on August 5.
Amesbury June 30 warrants in insolvency filed against all members of Adams and Pettingill shoe manufacturers.
Sunday Jacob Kent and his father Fred Kent capsized in Row Ley Bay as Howard Andrews and John Floyd from Grape Island rescued them. The elder Kent survived while his son did not. Cornelius F. Ryan and Cornelius Sullivan were found guilty at Fitchburg of selling oleomargarine and fined $100 each, both appealing. State dairy bureau prosecutes illegal oleomargarine sales in the region.
Rev Smith Baker pastor of Maverick Congregational Church East Boston led a Sunday fundraising effort raising 2700 in about half an hour to refresh the church audience room this summer.
A Boston yachtsman who visited New York last week reports on the first two trial races of the half-raters. He notes New York boats, led by El Heirie built at Lawley’s, are ahead of Boston designs, but local sailors like Paul Butler of Lowell on Vesper show superior trimming and crew placement. Duryea praised as a salt-water hand, yet Butler excels in handling these small craft.
St Johns hospital has become a vital emergency hub with multiple ambulance arrivals over recent days. Eight patients were admitted on June 15 and 20, five on June 24, six on June 26, and four on June 27, including severely injured individuals and a dying patient, all treated by Sisters of Charity and nurses while Dr Kingsbury begins as the new house physician.

Carter Street Grammar School bids: J C Simpson 1320, Cyrus Barton 1400, Patrick Va 1169, Benjamin G Brown 1000, H Fuller 1364. Pine Street bids: B E Brown 1500, Cyrus Barton 1620, W H Fuller 1443. Both contracts go to B E Brown.
John J. Jones of Dracut Navy Yard was struck on the head by a stone while returning home. An elderly man, he faced several assailants about twenty years old. The assailant was arrested by Officer Scott and booked as John Smith in Lowell. Jones’s injuries are not serious.
Cyrille Constantineau and his wife completed a two weeks engagement with a vaudeville company in Vermont. They signed important new engagements with prominent New England houses of amusement and plan to devote part of their time to that line of business.
Medard Robert of Pawtucketville was reported missing from his home Sunday and found later in Pelham after wandering nine miles. He is the father of Mr. Vital Robert, a contractor. Xavier Dufaut remains missing.
