Washington June 25 Admiral Dewey will not under any circumstances accept second place on the Democratic ticket. He would consider the presidency but declines the vice presidency, saying he does not want to be put in a position to decline. He emphasized he is willing to serve if the American people want him as president.

San Francisco June 25 The Sixth cavalry is ordered to recall its full war strength. It is believed it will be ordered to China.
Fred Lansair was cleaning the bottom of a well when stones caved in and trapped him for seven hours. Neighbors mounted a heroic rescue, and he survived barely. He remarked that it did not pay to clean a well on Sunday.
Alex Grant and David King were arrested on charges of involvement in the 1897 murder of John Reed and his sister in North Adams. They pleaded not guilty and the case was continued until July.
Boston on June 25 reports the North Atlantic squadron sailed for Newport this morning and is expected to arrive tomorrow morning.

President Hadley became the first layman to deliver Yale Universitys principal address at Battell chapel New Haven June 24 The baccalaureate sermon opened the commencement season attended by all members of the academic department and many guests from outside the university The senior class led the procession and there were more visitors than capacity could hold celebrating the first layman delivered address.
Mrs Emma Kelley a cook in the Kerr family at 67 Kirk street committed death by own action this forenoon by shooting herself in the temple. Found by Miss Kerr after 9.30 to 12 o'clock with two revolver chambers empty, likely linked to family troubles. She was about 32 or 33, recently with the Kerrs two weeks, and had ties to a husband and two children in New England.
The Central Congregational church plans a lawn party with a strawberry festival on Wednesday evening. Music readings by young people will accompany the berries and ices. Seben T. Adams has joined the invalid corps but is improving. Mr. W. S. Pierce recovers after a severe illness. Mr. P. F. Litchfield remains steady. Miss L. Maude Holt of Laconia, N H, visits relatives on Billerica Street.
Mr. A, D, Greeley conducted a rehearsal of his chorus yesterday at the Pawtucket church in preparation for a fall sing. Selections from Gounod Redemption and The Messiah were practiced with members from Hillside Art Center churches Dracut and Pawtucket assisting alongside other singers.
The McKinley club of ward 8 will meet Tuesday evening June 26 at 8 o'clock at the corner of Smith and Liberty streets. Shattuck and Son advertise cameras and supplies at low prices from 50 Central Street. The Worthen Street M E church hosts a lawn party and sociable at the home of Mr and Mrs B G Russell on Gibson Street Wednesday evening. Bernard Weters, the noted sprinter, who recently left for Paris to race this summer, is detained in Washington with a severe malaria attack.
The second class of the Lowell state normal school holds commencement exercises tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. The event is open to the public, followed by an evening reception. Earlier today seniors hosted a class spread at the school building.
Seven men described as possible boxers pleaded guilty to presence of gambling implements in Wong Sam laundry on Tilden street. Judge Hadley fined each 30 dollars and warned on future similar cases. A pot of 210 dollars was raised by friends. Separate drunkenness cases followed with sentences including one year at Sherborn for Grace Bond and Ethel Collier, three months for Michael J. A Sunday meeting of the Trades and Labor Council elected an executive committee with one delegate from each union. The body voted to hold a Labor Day grand parade and to form a coordinating committee from each union. Unaffiliated unions may send three representatives to work with the general committee. The council also deemed it inexpedient to join the Fourth of July parade.
A reception for Mr. and Mrs. George Mason at the First Primitive Methodist church celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Rev. N W Matthews offered congratulations and the couple received a purse from friends. A Hindle presented a bouquet. The event included singing, recitations, and light refreshments. The Masons were married in Rochdale, England, and have lived in Lowell for 15 years as Gorham Street church members.
Dr Kronberger alerted the board of health early today about a Market street case believed by Greeks to be smallpox. Dr Livingston and two inspectors visited 476 Market street, home of James Tri andafilakes, and found a child with chicken pox.
The Hamilton mills mechanics and plumbers held an outing at Luce's lodge in Pawtucketville Saturday afternoon. Refreshments and a series of sports were enjoyed.
Centralville Rebekah Lodge will hold a lawn party on the grounds of Mr. F J Flemings on High Street next Tuesday evening June 26. Admission is 10 cents.
Vernon Ramsdell a 32 year old married spare conductor on the Lowell and Suburban Street Railway died after taking laudanum at his Cabot and Merrimack streets boarding house in Lowell. His wife Delia and four children survive along with three sisters. he left a note of illness and financial hardship. Also noted is the death of John M. Black at 21 B street aged 70, survived by two daughters and two sons.
Joseph Porter Battles died at his North Andover home on Saturday after a long illness. Born April 23, 1822 in Dorchester, he moved with his family to Lawrence and Dorchester as a youth, later serving as paymaster and then agent at Atlantic Mills for 37 years. He became principal owner and treasurer of the Lawrence Machine Shop in 1881, retired in the last five years, and resided in North Andover. Surviving relatives include his wife Sarah Oliver, five children, siblings, and extended Battlerst family. He was a longtime Grace church ward en vestryman and a trusted figure among local leaders. The funeral is planned for Tuesday afternoon.

Rev Washington Gladden preached the baccalaureate at Wellesley college yesterday. The commencement oration will be by Theodore Woolsey of Yale on June 26. Alumnae mark the college twenty fifth anniversary on June 27 with an historical address by Mrs Louise McCoy North. Mrs Francis C Plunkett gifted a sanctuary lamp to St Patrick's church in memory of her husband. Ex City Messenger Frank M Fagan, in poor health, traveled to Sharon Springs NY with Dennis T Finnegan and Daniel Coughlin.
