Local social life mentions an afternoon tea while global facts show trade figures for Britain and the Philippines, a stamp to mark Columbus's discovery, and census-like notes on Philadelphia zoo animals and Civil War disease mortality.
An adjourned meeting in North Chelmsford considered the Fourth of July celebration funds and committee structure. About 114 dollars subscribed with an estimated 150 dollars total, and two new executive members were added. Debate over parade participants, cannon firing, and a flag raising ended with a plan to form smaller department committees. The meeting invited all town citizens to join the celebration.
In the J. G. Cote stock there are only a few all wool shawls. Single shawls drop from 2 to 98 cents, 3.25 to 1.48, doubles from 4 and 4.50 to 1.98, and from 5.50 and 6 to 2.98. These will not last long, basement sale by A. G. Pollard & Co.
A Kingston dispatch says Cervera plans a desperate escape from Santiago harbor at the first favorable moment. The Spanish fleet is coaled to full capacity and crews are kept aboard with no shore leave. Nightly, ships move down the bay to brace for a dash past the blockade and salvage some ships to fight another day. The report also mentions a circus show with new tents and outfits facing rain and mud at the fair grounds.
Kingston Jamaica June 22 the captain of the steamer Adula from Cienfuegos says it is learned the Spanish steamer Purissima Concepcion which sailed Kingston June 16 with food for the Spanish troops and 100000 in gold has arrived at Trinidad in Santa Clara province.
Since last September pupils at Warham School have moved from slant to vertical writing. An exhibition on walls displays average student work under Mr. Graves. Most pupils prefer vertical writing and praise the committee for the change.
San Francisco June 22 It is stated on good authority that Gen Merritt will sail for Manila next Wednesday on the steamer Newport, following the third fleet of transports which leaves Monday Brig Gen McArthur to command the next expedition
The sloop Alfredo, the first Cuban navy vessel, sails from New York bound for a Cuban port. Commanded by Dynamite Johnny O'Brien, noted filibuster, and a crew of seven men.
Paris June 22 President Faure invites M Paul Louis Peytral to form a cabinet that represents the diverse republican factions.
Joseph E. Richard of Co L Eighth Regiment writes from Chickamauga park camp. He notes warm weather limits work to morning hours, praises plentiful food, and urges Lowell French American youths to enlist for duty to country. Richard was born in Canada and moved to the United States young.
Friends of Rev. O H Denney from Mount Vernon F B parish hosted a complimentary outing yesterday at Willow Dale, with about 150 attendees. Participants enjoyed swinging, bowling, and boating before a 6 pm dinner. The committee was chaired by Mrs. Fred J. Williams, with Miss Alice Coram and Mrs. Pepin assisting.
During a storm a bolt hit carpenter Seward N Proctor at 53 Warwick Street. he was stunned while in the barn, an elderly ill woman in the house was slightly affected, none seriously hurt. The chimney collapsed and roof shingles were torn, but no fire occurred. Fire police checked for embers after a passerby reported smoke.
Walter L. Main's circus arrived during the night and woke the town with a morning parade. The streets filled with music and animals, drawing large crowds and signaling performances planned for the afternoon and evening.
The water board last night received the resignation of Leonard T. Farris after 25 years as meter clerk. Poor health forced retirement. The board expressed regret and announced George F. E. Worthen will assume duties, with Samuel D. Butterworth taking Worthen’s place. Both are veterans.
The Union Franco American plans a subscription drive among French Americans to raise money for a gold watch for George Charette after the war. The effort is independent of the city and asks only small contributions so children and others may donate.
The Sixth Regiment plans a strenuous march toward Newport News with Duffield’s brigade. Officers weigh direct routes and benefits of marching practice, ad vance and rear guard duties, and avoiding tropical risks for horses and equipment. Recruits arrive at Camp Alger as the Ninth Massachusetts prepares for Santiago.

Dr P D MacNaughton named surgeon of the brigade. Dr Vine to join soon. Dr O H Marion of the Sixth may resign due to poor health. Route march of the Second brigade canceled. troops to continue training at Camp Alger.
The parishioners of St Mary's church in Ayer gathered at the parochial residence on Tuesday evening to send Fr Sheedy off on his sea voyage. Joseph Mullen presented a floral horseshoe with a purse containing a $1000 check, amid warm greetings. Fr Sheedy expressed gratitude and the event featured a collation. Rev Jas A Walsh led efforts and will act as pastor in Fr Sheedy's absence.
Orrin Webster, the young man shot in the abdomen with a 22 calibre bullet Saturday night, died at Lowell General Hospital this morning at 1.12 o'clock after medical efforts failed. He gradually weakened until death.
At a meeting of L Union Franco Americain the delegates chosen to represent the society next Sunday at the St John’s Day celebration include Louis Turcot, Avila Bourbonniere, Charles Boisvert, Aime Gauthier, J Wilfred Paradis, Clovis Belanger, Jean Baptiste Filteau, Alfred Leblanc, David Parthenais and William Parthenais. An address by Alme Gauthier praised Sir Joseph Chapleau ex lieutenant governor of Quebec and sympathy for Lady Chapleau was expressed. Ex Councilman Clovis Belanger moved to present a medal to George Charette for bravery with a committee named to prepare the address: Belanger, Boisvert, Paradis, Gauthier, Bourbonniere.
The Star of Lowell circle C. of F. elected officers including Chief companion Miss Maria Markham and recording secretary Edward J. McGann. Others named were sub-chief companion Miss Sarah Clarke right guide Miss Bridget Horgan left guide Miss Mary Walsh inside guard Miss Mary Finnigan and outside guard Miss Bridget Ryan. Fifteen applicants were ballot results and five new membership applications were received. Installation set for the next meeting.
The body of Thomas Keyes, who drowned in the Merrimack river near Whittier's cotton mills on Monday afternoon, was found in Lawrence this forenoon. Undertaker Molloy and the boy's father, William F. Keyes, learned of the discovery around 10 o'clock and proceeded to Lawrence to bring the body home.

Seventy three youths spent the morning taking the entrance exam for admission to the high school in September. They came from several schools. Graduation exercises are held this afternoon in the high school hall and tomorrow night at the Opera House.
