Pawtucket R I June 17 A small militia contingent helped police keep order as twelve cars ran their routes through the city and Central Falls amid scattered stone throwing. A Dexter street car in Central Falls faced a prearranged attack with a cut out switch. Conductor and motorman fled after stones struck. the motorman injured in the back.
A large cheerful crowd filled the streets for Forepaugh & Sells circus parade. Parade featured gilt wagons with animals, bands including the Rube band, elephants, camels, lions and tigers, ending with the steam calliope. Evening show advised to start seating by 8 and cautions given to late arrivals.
London June 17 the royal procession left Windsor castle for Ascot Heath just before 1 pm with Queen Alexandra the Prince and Princess of Wales the Duke of Cambridge and other royals. The first full state parade since the Prince Consort's death featured nine carriages drawn by four horses and a gala cavalcade amid cheering crowds despite bad weather.
The Toronto conference of street railway employees adjourned at 4 o'clock this morning with nearly 1000 members present. A board of trade committee was admitted and tasked to convene a mass meeting tonight to appoint a committee to meet Airways company officials and press employe demands. International President Dilworth believes gains should be secured without a strike.
The American and Journal reports a $20,000 side stake match between Thomas Lawson's Boralma and E E Smathers's Lord Derby will be run at Hartford on August 2. Forfeits of $5000 have long been posted.
The Tabernacle society of Sacred Heart church held a pleasant Monday night gathering at Mrs. Neilon's Andrews street residence. Entertainment was provided by Mrs. Annie Neilon Miss Mamie Kearney Miss Susie Neilon and Miss Margaret Fox. Refreshments were served with Fathers Reynolds and Tighe O M L in attendance.
In New York at a special DAR meeting, the constitution was amended to authorize four vice presidents and six new governing board members. Elections filled vacancies with Mrs Frank Turnbull of Colorado as third vice president and Mrs Thomas Hill of Maryland as fourth vice president. Miss Clara B Adams of Massachusetts was elected to the governing board.
London dated June 17 reports Lord Kitchener's dispatch from Pretoria stating 915 Boers surrendered on June 16, completing Transvaal surrenders. Orange River Colony surrenders wrap up today, Cape Colony has 150 Boers left. He says the South African Constabulary has been handed to civil authorities as military operations cease.
Freddie Baldwin of East Chelmsford stepped on a broken bean pot in his yard Monday, cutting his left instep for a three inch gash. Eight stitches were needed to close the wound at the Emergency hospital where he was treated.
Private dispatches report the death of Rev. Father Cauvin once a leading Catholic priest in the United States. He died at age 94. in boyhood he was an intimate friend of Napoleon Bonaparte. Also noted are deaths of Mrs. Laura Astor Delano aunt of Col. John Jacob Astor, and Judge Lavant M. Read of Bellows Falls Vt a leading lawyer and political figure. Read served in the War of the Rebellion with the Second Vermont Regiment and was Vermont Bar president in 1892.
Superintendent of Water Works Thomas reports coal deliveries totaling five carloads this week with 150 tons purchased by Purchasing Agent Rourke. Centralville pumping will burn soft coal, avoiding wood fuel. The common council, water board, and board of health hold regular meetings tonight and Acting Mayor Badger visits Fort Hill park to review the proposed extension.
Washington reports Admiral Geo. Dewey will command a large American fleet assembled in West Indian waters for winter drills with most ships afloat in Atlantic waters. The President and Secretary Moody favor his command and may attend. the event draws many senators and representatives.
Chicago June 17 Bishop Alexander Walters, head of the Afro American Council, told a negro meeting that the black man must defend his home and family even to the death. The assembly urged Gov. Yates to shield Eldorado and Harrisburg residents after recent anti black violence and a Missouri lynching. The governor said authorities will act against assailants and law will be upheld.
Bridget Dempsey, 21, a county hospital patient with tuberculous meningitis, was pronounced dead after eight and a half hours of apparent death. Her heart briefly stopped, revived, then stayed lifeless except for irregular pulsations. Dr J H Mustard labeled the condition Landry's paralysis, a rare respiratory paralysis not immediately affecting the heart.
Groton Conn June 17 the steamer Chelsea of the Norwich and New York Propeller company struck rocks off Eastern Point at 3 30 am in a heavy rain. She was en route to Norwich with freight. Captain Scotts tug Albert towed her off at 8 am. Damage described as not serious.

In a foggy Sea Gate sea beach crash on Saturday night Frederick W. Wurster former Brooklyn mayor and Miss Jessie Cook of Brooklyn were badly injured. Wurster broke a collar bone while Miss Cook suffered a concussion and may die. Both were found unconscious after the auto plunged over a 20 foot bluff.

Officer Dooley saved two small children from a dangerous crossing as a light gig sped toward them near Worthen street and Merrimack while crowds waited for a circus parade. The quick action carried no injuries, and the girl was comforted before resuming her spot on the curb.

Albert M. Beyer and Henry Maddaugh of the Second United States cavalry at Fort Sheridan were arrested in Chicago after an ex-sailor, James Walken, who had served aboard the Oregon at Santiago, told police their tale. A man’s suit clothes were found on the Wheeling steel bridge over the Ohio river with a note saying he would end his life because no one cared for him. A second letter claimed New York City roots but left no identifying details. The body has not been recovered and no witness saw the leap.
