State targets cider vinegar adulteration with strict law
The inspector cites long running enforcement against adulterated cider vinegar. From 1883 to 1898 the state health board sampled 1750 vinegars with 927 adulterated, a 53 percent rate. In November 1901 thirty five of forty seven samples were adulterated and two New York manufacturers were enjoined from selling nonconforming products. The inspector warns dealers to comply or face prosecutions to keep Lowell’s market pure.

Hood Farm Jerseys sale not a closing out auction
Hood Farm’s recent sale of Jerseys and Berkshires was not a complete clearingout. The herd has grown so large that the sale aimed to reduce herd size to manageable levels, not discard all stock. About three quarters of animals sold had never yielded milk, including bulls and heifers, leaving Hood Farm with roughly 150 Jerseys still in production. Buyers paid high prices, reflecting strong demand for Hood Farm stock.
