Repairing Aiken street bridge proves a major project
The Aiken street bridge spanning the canal between Cheever and Ford streets requires extensive work beyond a simple plank swap. Rotten second planking and decayed stringers necessitate full replacement with new 3 inch block paving, raising the level slightly and prompting concrete adjustments at the ends. Seven or eight workmen remove curbstones while others rebuild woodwork, with several contracts spread among different firms. The bridge area draws daily sightseers yet allows carriage traffic through adjacent crossings, though sidewalks may face greater disruption on Sundays for parishioners heading to St. Jean Baptiste church.
