Sailor Killed in Self Defence Aboard Edward E Briery
Second Mate Johnson of the Edward E Briery is charged with murder after a West Indian sailor J C Finch allegedly attacked him with a knife and belaying pin. Finch died after a gunshot wound from Johnson. The 1600 ton Bath built schooner was bound from Philadelphia to Boston with coal when the incident occurred between Block Island and Gay Head. The Seminole sent an armed boat to the Briery and landed Johnson for trial.

In London Kentucky on June 1 two men were killed near Bernstadt. John Farmer and a young man named Whitaker died in the ambush. A Whitaker brother was slightly wounded. A survivor, riding behind, heard shots, found his brother and Farmer dead, and was wounded by shooters in nearby bushes as he approached. He fired four shots and escaped.
