Wilkesbarre July 23 The rock miners plan to petition the Mine Workers executive board for permission to return to work. Oxford colliery announces a resume date of August 2 but Wyoming operators have not signaled action. The region broadly expects no move to end the strike before September 1.
A head on collision today between two Brooklyn elevated trains at Adams Street derailed six cars and wrecked two, injuring multiple people including at least two fatally. Officials reported several victims and ongoing investigations into the cause of the crash.
The School Board will meet tonight to re elect superintendent Arthur K Whitcomb. The Water Board holds an adjourned meeting to consider city water rates with a large property owner in attendance. A subsequent dispatch reported a fatal locomotive collision with injuries.
Secretary Moody, guest of President Roosevelt for forty eight hours at Sagamore Hill, departs on the Dolphin for a northern voyage along the New England coast to Portland, Maine. A seventeen gun salute greeted his departure. Roosevelt spends a quiet forenoon with no official visitors until luncheon.
Premier A J Balfour told the House of Commons that Britain is unlikely to issue a formal statement on the Atlantic ship trust before Parliament recess on August 8. Any financial agreement with the trust would require House approval.
Cairo reports 35 new cholera cases and 88 deaths yesterday. Moncha records 10 cases and 21 deaths as the outbreak continues to spread across the region.
St Petersburg July 28 report cites cholera deaths in Manchuria between July 15 and 28 totaling 196 Russians and others, with the toll concentrated in the region. Officials record continued outbreaks and urge vigilance as health authorities monitor affected districts.
RECENT DEATHS. Van R. Patterson former judge of the supreme court of California is dead at his home in San Francisco aged 54. He was a native of New York. The largest private collection of cac ti in the United States is owned by Mrs. Ida Balmer Camp of Cairo Michigan. It contains many varieties not found elsewhere in this country.
In Chicago an unidentified 32 year old woman, fashionably dressed, was found strangled with a head wound in a Wells Street saloon wine room. Police suspect she was drugged and killed, as patrons nearby knew nothing of the crime. The victim’s identity remains unknown to regulars at the saloon.
Water levels begin to fall across Texas after two days of heavy rainfall. Rail service slowly restoring with regular traffic expected in three to four days. Cotton Belt line washed 260 feet near Bradton. Hillsboro bridge repaired. International and Great Northern back north of Palestine with extensive washouts on Richland and White Rock creeks. Dallas saw renewed downpours. Trinity River flooding persists but with limited damage.
Rome reports the death of Cardinal Ledochowski, prefect of the Congregation for the Propaganda, likely triggering shifts in high church offices. The deposition of Monsignor Meszczynski, once private secretary and effectively Ledochowski’s deputy, is welcomed amid a distasteful personality noted by many Americans.

In Pottsville Pennsylvania on July 28 Daniel Lenderman foreman at Kohinoor colliery Shenandoah was shot near his home by a crowd of strikers. His face and shoulders were torn with buckshot but recovery expected. Albert Lenderman chased and shot and four other non union men badly beaten.
A newly issued report shows 1657 vessels built in US ports in the year to June 30, totaling 478,981 gross tons, down from 1709 vessels and 479,616 tons the previous year. Steel steamers rise to 275,479 tons from 235,265, while canal boats and barges fall to 57,502 tons. Great Lakes output remains strong with 43 vessels built worth about 10.25 million dollars and orders for 28 more at 7.25 million. The focus is on large steel ships, with only two tow barges among the year’s lake vessels.
Chicago reports two prisoners Fred Ennis and John McQuig, with Sentry William Treet of Company M Twenty first infantry, disappeared from Fort Sheridan. No trace found, raising questions if the guard fled, the sentry was overpowered, or a confrontation occurred.
In Woodsfield Ohio on July 28 Mrs Eve Spence aged 19 killed her husband aged 21 who slept, then took her own life with the same pistol. The couple were married less than two months and both well connected. Authorities consider temporary derangement as a likely cause.
Rioting erupted in Venice following the Clerico-Moderates victory in communal elections. A mob smashed the Moderate club windows on Pizza Garibaldi and the club members threw chairs at attackers. Troops and police restored order. a similar outbreak occurred at Padua.
Friends and co workers in the J Ayer book bindery hosted a Saturday evening surprise for Miss Ella McQuade of 65 Pleasant street in her 21st birthday. A varied program featured the O Be Jolly quartet with solo and instrumental performances by Nora Johnson Lizzie Colby Annie Walker Gadagner Soltisah Kilvan Bambrick Noyes and others. A luncheon was served in the dining room.
New York July 28 Two men arrested in the Bowery have been identified by an electrical company employee as the suspects who recently held up and robbed the Port Chester office of the New York and Stamford Electric company in a sensational daytime robbery.
Washington July 28 announces pension changes for Massachusetts. Frank Mc Laughlin of Haverhill receives $6. Hanson W. Allen of Lowell, $12. Nathaniel B. Parsons of Gloucester, $8. Widows minors and dependent relatives Mary E. Tupper of Gloucester receives $8. The changes reflect original amounts and increases or reissues.
Four boys aged nine to twelve snuck aboard at Liverpool by removing a life boat cover. They hid for four days at sea before surrendering due to thirst. They will be taken to Ellis Island and sent back to Liverpool on the Covid s return voyage.
July bulletin from Dr. Treves reports the King's health excellent and the wound healing rapidly. He was moved from couch to a wheeled chair for a few hours yesterday, indicating visible improvement.
The National Rifle Association meeting at Bisley saw the Canadian team take victory in the reshoot for the Mackinnon cup. Canada scored 1375 against England 1340 and Scotland 1317.
Elliott Dow aged 7 grandson of Charles H Dow of Dow Jones & Co publishers of the Wall Street Journal drowned in Glenmere lake yesterday after falling from a boat in Middletown NeY. Local officials reported the accident and the boy’s body was recovered.

Rev Dr Stephen L Baldwin recording secretary of the Methodist Episcopal missionary society died of typhoid fever at his son Stephen C Baldwin’s Brooklyn home. He was 67, born in Somerville New Jersey, entered ministry in 1865, served as a China missionary, later pastor in Newark Nyack Boston and Brooklyn, and since 1889 held the secretary post in New York. Funeral set for New York Avenue Methodist Church in Brooklyn.
Reports from the Canisto township area detail a Saturday night cloudburst that washed away bridges and highways, flooding tobacco crops and drowning stock. Damage totals reach about 250 000 dollars across eighty square miles, with roadbed repairs expected to take days as the Erie line works to reopen.
