In New York on July 21 the first bale of 1898 crop presented by New Orleans citizens to the United States hospital fund was sold at the cotton exchange auction. Grand jury returned true bills on three counts accusing Simmons of obtaining signatures and property by false pretences. Bryan allegedly exchanged Chicago property valued at 135000 dollars for Florida land of little value in a Clarke syndicate thread manufacturers deal.
Boonton New Jersey July 21 reports say John Quick and John Henry Bott died yesterday from injuries suffered when lightning struck a party of nine near here. Four were killed and two others remain critical as the group attempted to recover. The storm-related tragedy follows earlier reports of multiple injuries and fatalities from the same incident.

Between twenty five and thirty Eliot church members and attendants joined yesterday’s excursion to Gloucester the annual church outing. The Lowell party traveled to Boston in the morning with some taking a basket lunch and then boarded the Cape Ann steamship down the shore enjoying a fine trip. Some visitors went to Bass Rocks and Rocky Neck with the return on the afternoon boat.

Edmund Scally aged 30 dies at 96 Coburn street after a night death. He belonged to Court Wamesit Foresters and Holy Name Society at St. Michael church. Survived by three sisters. Katherine Deering dies at 238 Chestnut street leaving two daughters and a son. Ellen Creaden dies at 228 Adams street aged 49 leaving three daughters and one son.
