Peter Bissonette of Nashua arrived in Lowell with a lame horse intended for auction. In front of Wood's jewelry store on Central street, Agent Richardson of the Humane Society intervened. The animal was removed from the team and delivered to a safe location for care.
Capt. Stearns, a veteran Lowell fireman aged 58, died after staggering at the hydrant while fighting a blaze started in shavings near a boiler at the New England Motor company building. He warned others and sprang into action, his sickness from stomach trouble not preventing a brave effort. He leaves a wife, daughter Cora A., son W. Arthur, and a brother Aaron. funeral plans to be led by Grace Universalist church pastor.
Three drunks faced Judge Pickman in police court. John F. O Grady was placed under Probation Officer Tuttle for five months, Fred L. Dam was fined five dollars, and a third offender faced a six dollar fine. Frank Dunlap awaiting trial on assault and battery was held in hundred dollars. Several cases were continued to July 22 or August 16.
