The Clyde liner Delaware, en route from New York to Charleston and Jacksonville, was abandoned off Barnegat last night after catching fire. All 70 aboard, including passengers and crew, were saved by the life saving crew.
Suez July 9. The Spanish fleet under Admiral Camara has re-entered the canal. Port Said July 9. Six Spanish war ships have arrived here on the way back to Spain.
Governor McCord announces a definite leave of absence from his executive duties to command as colonel a regiment of infantry now being recruited in Arizona. The move places the territory's leadership directly in the field as military activity increases.
Suez July 8 reports Admiral Camara's squadron anchored beyond the three mile limit awaiting the Pelayo. Camara visited the governor with salutes exchanged. Paris July 8 notes the Spanish squadron preparing to return to Spain after re-entering the Suez canal.
Hong Kong reports the rebellion in Kuang Si spreading with Yungh Sien Pelih Linh fallen and Swa Chou Woo Chow threatened. Disturbances rise at Chin Kiang Tu on the Yangtze as navigation is impeded.
Thomas F Connors, a Wakefield resident, has been missing from his home since May 2. Married about two years to a St. Joseph's parish woman, his wife fears an accident may have occurred. Connors, 32, 5 feet 6 inches, 160 pounds, light complexion with gray blue eyes and sandy moustache, was a charter member of Wakefield Council Knights of Columbus and member of Division 12 A O H. He had not spent a night away from home since his marriage and was known for temperate habits.
A collision tore apart the train at Stony Brook near the ice houses in North Chelmsford early this morning. Sixteen dump cars left the track as two passenger trains from Salem to Ayer and from Lowell to Ayer transferred passengers at the wreck site around 2 30 am.
The jury in county court Brooklyn returned a verdict of murder in the first degree against Martha M. Place for the murder of her step-daughter Ida Place, 18, after a trial that lasted two hours and forty five minutes following a late evening hearing. In Concord New Hampshire a seven year old boy, Frank Whitcomb, drowned on a Friday while playing on a stone quarry ledge near Blossom Hill cemetery.
Salem July 9 Alfred C Williams condemned for the murder of John Gallo was sentenced by Judge Sherman to be hanged on October 7 He maintained his innocence to the end in court remarks and protests after the sentence was pronounced
In Canton China on July 9 rebels captured Moning and Tienpak and now surround Wu-Chuen-Sien. Many internal revenue officers have been fatally hurt and the situation remains critical.
London July 8 The Gibraltar correspondent of the Daily News reports Admiral Camara's fleet in deplorable condition and mentions an informant describing damaging faults.
Secretary of the Navy Long outlines four main causes for the fleet’s success near Santiago. He praises American ship design, high naval personnel, extensive gunnery practice funded by Congress, and the decisive support of bureau chiefs who prepared the navy with prompt funding from a $50 million fund.
Manager Sullivan of the street railway company discussed Gorham street paving from the railroad crossing near the fair grounds to Edson cemetery. He said no agreement was reached in a special meeting and the issue will be revisited next Tuesday night. He defended the company’s paving as in the public interest and mentioned a 48 hour deadline dispute over the unused turnout on Lawrence street near Stott's mills.
Lieut Healey recruiting officer of the Ninth regiment passed through Lowell this morning on a route from Clinton to Lawrence. All new Lawrence enlistees will depart for Camp Alger this afternoon. The remaining three companies in Lowell Clinton and Worcester delay until next week due to missing transportation blanks.

Proprietary medicines sold from stock now require revenue stamps, causing annoyance in drug and other stores. Clerks face possible penalties up to 500 dollars for tax violations. Stamp rates range from a fraction of a cent to two and a half percent of price, raising medicine costs for consumers. Since July first manufacturers stamp at factories, with retail dealers to follow after current stock clears if war persists.
Frank M. Osborne of Lowell and William P. Whittier of Boston were arraigned in Newton court on breaking and entering and larceny charges for stealing nearly $1000 of property from A. B. Cumnor on June 25. They pleaded not guilty and were bound over for grand jury in $3000 each after a lengthy read of the stolen items.
Over the past ten days nickels have grown scarce, felt more at banks than by merchants. A paying teller notes the government could supply more, but demand depends on the shorty. He cites large coin shipments to army and navy payrolls as the cause, with little return of change yet.
William M. Bagley known as Nutt Bagley faced Judge Hadley after escaping from the city farm this week. He received a four month jail sentence for escape, while farm inmates spoke of harsh treatment and labor displeasure. Drunkenness fines and related sentences appeared, including Mary Lucier four months, Michael Sullivan six months, Wm H Ryan six months, and James F. Murphy four months for interfering with an officer.
Ellen Riley died last evening at the home of her parents Patrick and Margaret Riley located at 247 Dutton Street. The infant was aged one year and five months.

Charles Edward Bonnell and Miss Hattie Claflin Whall of Littleton were married on July 7 in Littleton in a ceremony officiated by Rev. I F Porter.
