Alarm sounded yesterday at 10 45 for a fire in the home of Margaret Conroy on Lawrence street. A frozen water pipe was thawed and the heat set paper alight, igniting a partition near the roof before firefighters arrived to extinguish the blaze.
Two masked men broke into Louis Stanwood’s home on January 1 and tortured him, disfiguring him with knife stabbings and hair burning to extract hiding places for money. They raided a second house and stabbed a man on the road. Two farmers were arrested. the punishment is life imprisonment.
Funeral service held at Lowell cemetery for Mrs James C Ayer who died in Paris on January 3. The body arrived in New York Saturday and was placed beside her husband in the family plot. Bearers included Jacob Rogers Thomas F Nellis Dr M G Parker and L H Babcock. Rev A St John Chambre read the committal at the grave while services were held in Paris. J C Ayer company offices were closed for the day.
Bridget Flanagan aged 38 was found dead in a room at No 6 Little Street at 10 this morning by her husband Patrick Flanagan who said she awoke at 7 and vanished. Medical Examiner Irish ruled heart failure though neighbors cited want of food and warmth. Flanagan to be taken to the city farm.
George E Pevey a Lowell resident for 50 years died early Sunday in East Wakefield N H at 58 He was born in Peterboro N H in 1839 educated in Lowell and trained as a machinist and draftsman He led Pevey Brothers foundry in Lowell served in the Old Sixth Massachusetts regiment and was a Sid degree Mason He married Annie E Brown in 1867 one child died and last spring moved to a Wakefield farm Funeral arrangements will be announced in a future notice Also noted were the deaths of Samuel G Austin 66 a Lowell resident of 50 years with WW Twenty-Sixth Massachusetts service and Patrick H Welch 32 formerly wine clerk of Dempsey Place
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 49 Wamesit Street for Mary Gray with burial in the Catholic cemetery. Edward Young, who died at the city hospital, was laid to rest Saturday at 2 PM at the Peter HM. Savage residence, with burial in Edson cemetery. Eben Hestin was honored this morning with services at Immaculate Conception Church at 10 AM, Rev Lawrence officiating, and burial followed at the church grave.
Solos were sung by Messrs P P Haggerty and David P Martin. The bearers were Messrs Daniel Halloran, P Welsh, Haggerty, McDermott, Riley and Gelineau. Burial was in charge of P H Savage.
Local Salvation Army officers detailed their past year’s work before a large Eliot church gathering in Sewell. They described unusual methods as the only way to reach certain groups, and a collection was taken at the close for the army.
The First Trinitarian Congregational church children’s choir enjoyed a surprise Saturday sleigh ride in Gilmore’s big General Sherman sleigh with about fifty participants. Other items note Lt. Scribner’s orders to Harrisburg, an appendicitis operation for D Dana Bartlett, engagement announcements for Louise Allen and Alexander Hobbs, and local awards and meetings in Boston and New York.
William G. Gaudette and Miss Marie Axa Gaulin were married at St. Joseph's Church by Rev. Fr. Emard. The ceremony united the couple before family and friends in a traditional religious service.
Death notices report Alonzo M. Bartlett died January 29 in the city with funeral at 2 PM at 24 Barclay Street. James J. Ready died January 31 at his Greenmont Avenue home in Dracut. The item quotes a Philadelphia North American joke about a visitor’s purpose in town.

Rev RR A Greene preached at Grace Church on a cold morning. He outlined core religious doctrines of supreme importance such as God Christ man immortality and perhaps a few others.
The speaker argues Jesus is a great and good leader in moral and spiritual life beyond doctrinal divides. He praises Jesus as a teacher, a source of truth, and a model of worthy heaven earned by personal merit, emphasizing love, leadership, and the unique revelation of God through Christ.
At Fifth Street Baptist Church on Sunday morning Pastor Rev Millington preached from Lk 19 41 42 and reflected on Jesus weeping over Jerusalem The sermon described the Olivet scene with crowds praising him while Jesus saw both the joy and the citys deeper sin and the hardening of hearts The account hints at continuation on page five
