Fire broke out in A Govostes candy shop on Merrimack Street in the old City Hall building just after 6 this morning. Flames were quenched with little damage. shop was vacant. Assistant Fire Marshal Stone and Inspector Allen investigated. cause undetermined. Insurance on stock noted at 2000 with H C Church & Son. Govostes bought 500 dollars of candy yesterday.
Alarm from box 215 reported a fire at E. T. Stott's mill on Meadowcroft Street. About three to four hundred dollars of property was lost due to spontaneous combustion.
A colored baby boy was born in the police station early this morning during a bastardy case involving Annie E Ellison and Joseph H Raymond. Matron Wallace helped the mother as an ambulance arrived and took mother and child away after the birth. The prisoner and complainant are described as colored.
Judge Hadley sentences John Taylor to six months at the state farm for drunkenness. Joseph Lake remains under $200 bond until tomorrow on drunkenness charges. William Larose held for Superior court in $500 for breaking and entering Eloi A Leclaire’s place. Orphe Plamonde placed on probation for neglecting to support his wife. John Cassidy sent to Lyman reform school after tobacco store intrusion. Eugene Guinn and Thomas Foley dismissed with a reprimand after snowball incident.
The First Universalist society held its annual parish supper in the church vestry last night with about 300 attendees. After the meal, speeches were delivered by Rev. J LeLisher, Rev. Frank O. Hall, Rev. G. W. Bicknell, George W. Brothers, and others. Mrs. A K Sherman served as supper committee chairperson.
Deposits in the savings department close on Monday February 3 at 4 p.m. at four percent per annum. Interest can be added to principal or withdrawn on January and July 1 each year. An elderly American miser named Peters died after illness on the street and in his lodgings. He lived on 30 cents daily for 12 years in Paris. Inside his room 29,000 francs were found along with papers and securities totaling 1,800,000 francs. Some checks originated from Boston.
August N Newton, third son of late Major General John Newton and a renowned engineer, died after taking an overdose of chloral by mistake at his home. He was pronounced dead this morning at Madison Street Hospital after being rushed there for treatment.

Dr Nat Carlin a leading veterinary surgeon died last night in St Louis Missouri He served in the Grant administration directing the General s stables and was nationally prominent in his field His death marks the loss of a noted animal medicine expert and longtime military equine caretaker.
Plymouth Indiana January 31 John Sweverland a well known stock buyer was shot and killed at the farm of Charles Alsener last night by Samuel S. Stuart authorities reported the shooting occurred at the Alsener farm near Plymouth Deliberations and details of motive were not released as the investigation continues and Stuart is held for questioning in the case
Lexington Kentucky January 81 the executive committee of the W C T U has issued a protest against the use of whiskey when the new warship Kentucky is launched and christened.
The Senate committee on privileges and elections voted along party lines five to four to receive Du Pont as senator from Delaware. The report favors admission, reflecting a partisan division on the contested seat.
In Biddeford Maine on January 31 burglars entered the Barr mill office last night and stole about $2. The incident prompted a police investigation as authorities search for suspects and review security footage.
At the residence of the bride’s cousin Mrs Arthur W Saunders 94 Twelfth street on Thursday evening Miss Ida I Barnard of Malden and Mr Leroy S Kimball of this city were united in marriage by Rev R A Greene. They will reside at 4 Kirk street and be at home after February 15 with no cards.
The Street Railways Committee of the Legislature visited this morning to inspect the Lowell and Suburban road. Thirty in all attended, including road representatives and others aboard the visiting car. Luncheon followed at the Richardson hotel.

Commander Thayer issues orders for the 20th annual Massachusetts G A R encampment at Associate hall Lowell February 12 and 13 with 9 am assembly, banquet tickets at $1, rail rates two cents per mile under 25 miles and $1 beyond 25 miles, and details for B F Butler post Lowell to assign duty officers plus guard units. Prominent attendees include Gov Greenhalge and Comrade Ivan H Walker.
Inspectors Laflamme and Allen arrested William Larose last evening for the December burglary at Greenhead's store at Aiken street and Lake view avenue. He confessed admitting to entering the store, amassing goods, smoking a pipe which started a fire, then discarding plunder in a cellar a bag and a field. Police had previously detained him and much of the stolen property was recovered from his leads.
George I. Pierce, a contractor living at Middlesex and Sayles streets, is jailed for $20.83 owed to Joseph A. Barton for labor. After judgment, Pierce refused to pay, invoked the poor debtor oath, and hired counsel who was paid in the hearing. He owned a horse but refused to assign it. a certificate for arrest followed.
Ten Highland Club members and ten Vesper members clashed in a game to decide who buys a wine supper. The event was held last night at the St. Charles hotel with 22 men at the table, toastmaster J M Kilgore, and speeches by all. Mr and Mrs J S Rose of Riverside street welcomed a ten pound baby boy.
Mrs Harriet Ellen Collier 42 lies between life and death at her Gorham street home after consuming morphine pills to relieve eye pain from mill work in South Andover. Police and ambulance rushed to the scene at 10 o clock. she regained consciousness at 1 pm but remains weak. Her husband William Collier works at Faulkner’s mill. they have two children.
Belvidere reservoir water from the Locks and Canals company is now used in City Hall boilers. A blown valve, lime concerns, and a gauge spoilage prompted the change. River water, pumped by corporations, mixes with driven well water at about a million gallons daily.
The committee on accounts met early with Councilman White as secretary to approve the payrolls. John Adams died at his Lincoln residence on Thursday afternoon from Bright's disease and arsenical poisoning. Aged 68 years 9 months, he leaves a widow and two sons, J. Frank and Henry B. Born in Sudbury May 1, 1827, he early farmed then moved to Boston to study and teach. After a long Fitchburg railroad career, he retired Nov. 1, 1893 as general superintendent and later traveled to California and Europe. He belonged to Putnam Lodge, Boston Natural History Society, Middlesex Club, California Pioneers, and Old Forty-niners. He sailed around Cape Horn in 1849.
Edward E. Adams hosted an afternoon and evening music gathering in his Odd Fellows suite. In the afternoon younger pianists performed with Adams assisting in duets. Evening soloists included Katherine Kneeland Hattie Hall Lilla Simpson Cora Abbott Clinton Carpenter Nettie Denarden Edith Haines Cora Parker Louis Masson George Russell and Frank Davis. Refreshments followed creating a social atmosphere.
Nearly every member attended the Florence lodge meeting Wednesday night ten were initiated and several proposals. Officers chosen include Chief templar Harry Richardson vice templar Mrs I J Marsh secretary Mrs D Choate financial secretary E J Marsh treasurer John Wotton marshal John Henderson past chief templar Charles D Robinson. Next regular meeting will be held at the home of Mr and Mrs E J Marsh.
The Overseers of the Poor met at the city farm to abolish the woodyard again and appoint William A Lang as chaplain without salary. Discussion covered payrolls, the woodyard committee, and funding, with Mayor and police board input and a plan to house tramps.
The Reform club announced season ticket winners Eliza Quinn John H Kenney Thomas H Grimshaw and Austin Conway. The Ladies Auxiliary met for a social session followed by a dance and the club plans a smoke talk for a coming evening.
Col Pindar visits the woodyard to request ex-Supt Garvey remain under his orders until Monday. Officials notify action of the Overseers of the Poor this morning. Ambulances will not be moved to the city farm as they belong to the dispensary committee. An inventory of stock will be taken.

The new street committee met in Chen ey's office and obtained an opinion from City Solicitor Qua. Aldermen Flemings Pevcy and councilmen discussed surveying highways and extending time for Daniel Gage to move his ice houses. The panel authorized pay roll approval and adjourned until Monday.
The Star states Burke Marshall Corbett remain Mr Hill's attorneys and know his location. He has simply left the state for his health and will not oppose the court decree, intending to comply with its provisions.
