Boston January 28. R S Prine Transportation Co teams guarded by police pass streets as Brine Company seeks injunction against strikers. Court hearing continues with many witnesses yet to appear. Police vow vigilance until danger passes and unrest subsides.
Workers cleared debris at Murray Hill and Grand Union hotels Grand Central station and Manhattan Eye and Ear hospital after yesterday's tunnel explosion. Hospitals reported patients doing well many released home today with some to be returned to other institutions as preparations continued.
San Francisco on January 28 Sir Thomas Fitzgerald Melbourne eminent surgeon and British army consulting surgeon in South Africa says fevers from bad water kill more people in South Africa than Boer bullets during the war.
Thomas Perry of this city has been awarded an increase of pension. President David Gerow and Secretary R. J. McCluskey will represent Lowell in the convention of the Retail Grocers' National association at Milwaukee this week.
The Traders National Bank transacts general banking business and issues foreign exchange payable worldwide in English French German and Swedish. It furnishes safety deposit boxes with private rooms and pays 31 percent per annum in its Savings Department compounded semi annually. It is a depository for the United States and Commonwealth of Massachusetts and operates a section of banking exclusively for ladies.
Banking hours listed as 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The banking rooms span numbers 30 to 46 on Middlesex Street and 11 to 24 on Post Office Avenues.
A small dog belonging to John L Mulcahy awakened townsfolk early in Brookfield allowing firefighters to confine a blaze to three two story buildings all total losses. Damage about 15000 dollars, fully insured. The middle building owned by Mulcahy started the fire. Five rescuers were injured when a wall collapsed, including A N Bellows Fred Clapp Geo H Chapin B Richardson Irwin and James Boland. all are expected to recover.
London reports from Lord Kitchener dated Johannesburg January 27 detail ongoing Boer activity and British actions. Methuen's yeomanry suffered 8 killed 5 wounded and 41 captured near Rietelei. later liberated. Bruce Hamilton dispersed a Boer laager near Ermelo with Boer losses 2 killed 4 wounded and 94 prisoners, including De Filers and De Jager relatives. Plumer captured 55 Boers. Field Cornet Bodes and three followers surrendered after a quarrel over surrender. Weekly Boer losses totaled 31 killed 20 wounded 322 prisoners and 33 surrendered.
Senator Carmack submitted a minority report from the committee on Philippines criticizing the Philippine tariff bill. He argues the measure infringes constitutional rights and oversteps power, opposing colonial policy, control of vassal provinces, and military aggression for spoils.
Mexico City January 27 The project for an international court of claims was presented at today's Pan American conference session. Although less noted than the arbitration treaty it is of practical importance as a compulsory arbi tration plan aimed at pecuniary claim controversies only.

Charles E C Marble aged 32 hanged himself in a barn on the Rev Essek Keynon farm at Hillsville yesterday. Marble, adopted son of John W Marble a Sutton farmer, had come to Hillsville last month and worked there. Medical examiner says Marble was of unbalanced mind and eccentric.
Chicago January 28 After 23 sessions five past chancellors of the Inter Domain lodge unanimously acquit John A Hinsey former head of the insurance department. Charges of mismanagement and misappropriation tied to a $500000 shortage were dismissed as the trial found loaned $59000 on good security later repaid and the Milwaukee charge of $1726 as secretary disproved.
In Philadelphia on January 27 the weekly Methodist ministers meeting discussed Prof Charles Pearson’s criticisms of biblical miracles. A heated discussion targeted seminaries texts. Mrs. Fanny Ridlon of Sweden Maine and her three year old child were badly burned when Mrs Ridlon fell into an open fire at home. Her flaming clothing set the house ablaze and both mother and child, found by neighbors and physicians, remained in serious condition with uncertain chances of recovery.
Nashua New Hampshire January 28 A complaint filed with police commissioners accuses several officers of damaging a suspected liquor raid they conducted overturning boxes and leaving the site in disorder. The raid at Bridge street run by John Flynn found no liquor. Flynn has hired counsel and a hearing date is pending.
Seattle January 28. Lawyer John F Maroney of Juneau, returning from Alaska, says Musi Creek to the interior from Porcupine is rich. He estimates diggings will yield $25 to $30 daily per man. Creek spans 12 miles and is auriferous along its entire length.
Muskegon Michigan on January 28 endures the worst blizzard of the season. Snow has fallen steadily since Sunday afternoon, driven by a fierce gale, making walking nearly impossible. Thermometer near zero and dropping.
Santos-Dumont conducted a trial ascent of his air ship in Monte Carlo. The craft responded smoothly to the helm in light breeze, then returned to its shed as crowds cheered the ascent.

In police court Judge Hadley ridiculed Daniel W Higgins as a lazy husband and deprived his wife of supporting him. The session also saw a boy named John Christie confined to juvenile court for trying to steal pies, while Louis Bouchard was fined for stealing a hat and an overcoat. Other cases included larcenies from Charles M Gage and non support pleas, with several defendants fined or sent back to reform school or state farm.
In Syracuse a New York Central limited train struck an idle switch engine at Oneida station. The impact demolished engines and station. engineer Dorsey Welch of Albany was killed and fireman Cahill of Albany injured. No passengers or crew were hurt. cars stayed on the track.
A Brooklyn man identified as Henry Mayne register at a leading Philadelphia hotel on Sunday night and was found dead in his bed last night from carbolic acid poisoning. He appeared to be about 45, had ample money and paid for the room in advance, with no baggage and no further visits to the lobby since assignment.
New York reports a Philadelphia hotel death is believed to be Henry Manne, a New York lawyer who resided at 59 East 65th Street with an office at 55 Liberty Street. Manne had been missing since Sunday after leaving his home at 2 PM for a Brooklyn meeting and failing to appear or be seen since. His colleagues offered no immediate theory of suicide.
A blaze in Lyons New York on January 28 gutted the Commercial hotel Philip Mandel's marble cutting shop and a tenement owned by A H Tower. Loss estimated at 15000 dollars with damage to adjacent structures. Fire crews battled the flames through the day.
Belfast January 28 reports the Marquis of Dufferin weakened this morning as doctors remain in constant attendance at Clandeboye.
Jan 28 South Ashburnham fire guts Mansion house and nearby tenements causing $15,000 total loss with partial insurance. Residents escaped barefoot as flames raced from kitchen to stairway. Fitchburg and others offered aid but fire burned out, earlier occupants were alarmed and fled by windows. Mansion house owner Geo. W. Smith cites $12,000 loss with partial insurance. tenement loss $3,000. The mansion housed locals previously.
Two fire calls were reported this morning. A chimney blaze in Perkins street proved unnecessary. Shortly after eight, box 25 dispatched crews to a blaze in a John Ayer estate tenement, which was a pile of rags and easily extinguished.
A musicale at the home of Mr and Mrs Edward F Slattery 6 Arlington street was much enjoyed by a small gathering Monday night. Contributors included Edward Arvis a noted violinist Miss Julia Slattery Miss Theresa Slattery and Miss Julia Dunn.
Margaret Bain of 655 Merrimack Street fell at work in the Tremont and Suffolk mill this morning and broke her left ankle. An ambulance carried her to Lowell Hospital.
