Boston slowly recovers from a major blizzard as thousands of workers clear piled snow, streets and streetcar lines operate with delays, ships suffer storm damage along the coast, and two deaths from exposure are reported while trains resume service amid frigid five degree temperatures.
New York reports a brutal blizzard as a Bronx fire forced 150 residents from tenement blocks. Firefighters battled impassable streets and frozen hydrants, saving many in frigid conditions. Eight cold deaths were noted and fuel and milk shortages threatened city life amid halted trains and blocked rail routes.
In Manchester on January 26 a zero temperature morning with gale winds kept snowfall drifting, yet steam and trolley lines still managed to run close to schedule. The scene remained cold and windy with lighter drifting than yesterday.
Sandwich Massachusetts reports the two masted fishing schooner Monitor of Provincetown struck Sagamore beach bar during a severe winter storm. The captain and three crewmen endured hours clinging to rigging in freezing cold until dawn when they reached land. The vessel remained afloat but damaged. High tides caused extensive shore damage and destruction of fish houses.
The reception to the officers of the Ladd and Whitney Circle Ladies of the G. A. R. scheduled for Wednesday the 25th at Mrs. Boudinot’s residence at 31 Royal street has been postponed until further notice.
Manila reports Gen. Corbin will send the third troops of the second cavalry under Maj. F. W. Sebley to Cavite to aid insular forces against Ladrones near Silang. Estimates place the band at 300. The fight continues as leaders of the group demand ransom for ex Governor Trias’s wife and two children after a San Francisco de Malabon attack.
Essen, Prussia, Jan 26 coal mine owners decided to inform the government they would accept any judgment from a parliamentary commission after inquiry into miners grievances. They pledged to immediately remove any grievances found.
Bulletin from Potsdam reports Prince Eitel Friedrich's pneumonia affecting the left lung lower lobe. He had a fairly good night, less coughing, and 102 degree fever with rapid pulse. Empress visited, Crown Prince William ill with influenza, denied a shared pneumonia diagnosis.
Richmond Virginia January 26 The supreme court of appeals denied the supplementary appeal in ex mayor McCue of Charlottesville convicted of wife murder He was sentenced to be hanged January 20 and respiration by Governor Montague extended the execution to February 10
William F. Ladue, the athlete who has suffered heart trouble, is much improved today and out of danger according to his physician Dr. R. Mignault.
Judge Hadley presided as two drunks faced the court in a sparsely attended session. Frank Kane pleaded guilty to drunkenness and paid a $2 fine, while William E. Brady was sentenced to three months of jail treatment at Thorndike Street Palace. The blizzard was noted for reducing arrests and filings.
A city weather report notes the storm is subsiding but winds whip remaining drifts. Streetcar service limps along with significant outages and diggers working from Tyngsboro to Lakeview. Washington January 26. The Census Bureau released a preliminary cotton ginning report to New Orleans cotton growers. It shows 215 of 812 counties reporting ginned cotton to January 16 totaling 3,094,476 running bales this year versus 2,439,178 a year earlier. Including half-bales the total is 3,064,551 this year against 3,? last year. counties reported 201,520 bales ginned to Jan 16, 1905, in excess of the Dec 13, 1904 total.
January 26 Philadelphia reports six degrees above zero on the weather bureau thermometer at 8 am with zero temperatures overnight. Wind reached 40 miles per hour and drifting snow disrupts railroad traffic. No trains from New York or the west and south, suburban trains delayed, and Camden departures to the sea shore halted by both Pennsylvania and Reading companies.

In Washington the House adopted a joint resolution to appropriate 40000 dollars to defray Senate trial expenses for Judge Charles Swayne. The session then moved to the agricultural appropriation bill with Mr. Currier presiding. Mr. Littlefield pressed Mr. Wadsworth on whether appropriations would stay the same or be cut to avoid higher taxes.
In Budapest on January 26 elections for the Hungarian diet proceed without incident while the provinces report some disturbances. From forty districts tallied so far, 23 Liberals and nine Kossuthists have been elected.
Washington January 26 Senate followed yesterday's adjournment and did not convene until 1 p.m. with only twelve senators present. Routine business proceeded as normal despite the sparse attendance. A Philadelphia Press quip recalls Demosthenes overcoming speech difficulties by learning to talk Greek.
News update notes steamers arrived with Rotterdam ships from Rotterdam and Boulogne. The Devonian reached Boston after sailing from Liverpool, both events reported from New York and Boston on January 26.

Southampton dispatch reports the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse delaying departure to New York due to Bremen fog. On board are passengers including A J Drexel Baron Speck von Sternburg the German ambassador and Richard Croker noted in the passenger list.
Japanese forces seized the Austrian steamer Burma off Hokkaido at 9 o'clock last night. The ship carried about 4000 tons of Cardiff coal and was en route to Vladivostok.
