The Danish West Indies cession treaty was signed in Washington by Secretary Hay and Danish Minister Brun. It will be sent to the Senate for ratification immediately.
The transport Thomas, Capt. Buford, will depart San Francisco for Manila on February 1 carrying 1500 unsigned recruits from the Presidio. Officers slated to sail include Maj. William Paulding of the 3rd Infantry, several lieutenants from multiple infantry units, and Philippine Scouts member James P. Hutchinson.

San Francisco January 24 Judge Arthur H Noyes of Alaska lies at Mount Zion hospital in an exceedingly precarious condition. Doctors hold little hope for recovery after a hemorrhage of the lungs caused by tuberculosis.
A young man claiming to be an assistant at the Brockton smallpox hospital developed smallpox in New Bedford yesterday. He arrived two days ago and is named McDonald, now removed to the smallpox hospital.
The Nauwilgeauk boat club held a Thursday night concert and supper in observance of their new club house opening on Billerica street. Participants included Mark Stanley Thomas Miller Bennie Weters Richard Hartley and William Staples with H G Walker H Stanley and O L Pearson in charge of the program.

Dr T B Smith bacteriologist for the health department reports 249 diphtheria cultures analyzed in the last year averaging over six daily. A committee on education meeting is called to consider requests from the school committee including more land for the high school annex. An early meeting of ordinances and legislation is needed to act on a proposal to increase the committee on appropriations by two members.
Boston lawyer Charles W. Lavers urged Judge Hadley to lower Howard A. Selah's bond after Selah was held for the grand jury. The judge declined, noting Selah remains jailed pending settlement of the case. Lavers cited Selah’s New Haven family and prior position, while maintaining the signature on the loan document followed the money.
In Westford the selectmen appoint Edward Fisher to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Gilman J. Wright. Fisher, native and Westford Academy graduate, sergeant in Troop F cavalry, practices law with his brother, retains Westford residence, and heads the local squad. Fellow townsmen call the appointment excellent.
Lew Warner an American horseman died this morning in Newmarket England from self inflicted gunshot caused by pleurisy. William Duke brought Warner to England and he later joined Edward Corrigan's stable here.
Belfast Maine January 24 Luther Gannett an 88 year old man living alone was burned to death in his home early today. It is believed he tried to light a lamp at night and set fire to the bed clothing. Overcome by smoke while attempting to extinguish the blaze he died without relatives.
Paris officials denied the report that the French cruiser Charlemagne was ordered to Tangier to stage a demonstration against Morocco over the murder of two French officers.
George H Colter was arrested in Boston this morning on the charge of non-support. Inspector Donaldson pursued him. Colter's wife is the complainant.
In Lowell police court John Bourdusis was found guilty of assault and battery after using an iron bar to strike John Polakis, causing a bone deep cut and concussion. Polakis lamented the brutal quarrel from a mill workplace dispute and Bourdusis received three months in jail with an appeal filed.
Euthimious Loukas, 16, faced assault and battery charges against James Papas, 16, after a schoolyard fight witnessed by teacher Harry Newall. Newall helped Papas to his feet and home. The attack left a cut mouth and nose. Judge Hadley imposed a $2 fine.
John Mallinson of Brunswick Place off Chelmsford Street was caught by a machine at 8:50 this morning in Hamilton mills and sustained a compound fracture. he was taken by ambulance to Lowell hospital. Mrs Maggie Cox of 1 Fulton Street fell on the sidewalk last night and broke her right ankle. she was also transported to Lowell hospital.
