In Campaign Illinois on January 28 William Cousins attempted dynamite blasting and was blown 35 feet, instantly killed. He had been sentenced to 25 years for killing a boy but was pardoned last fall. He died within 10 feet of where the murder occurred.
Ottawa UL January term grand jury returns indictments against all executives and saloon keepers of Peru La Salle and Utica for malfeasance in office by not closing saloons on Sunday. Epworth league provided evidence from one city.
Chelsea Jan 23 A tin peddler Benjamin Grodir ski was struck and killed by the Rockport express this morning at the crossing. The gate tender says the man forced his horse beneath the gates, causing the fatal accident.
London Jan 23 reports Russia and Turkey have formed an offensive and defensive alliance based on the 1838 treaty. It is also said that France may be included.
A French boarding house on Lafayette street run by Antoine St Pierre was partly destroyed by fire this morning. Several inmates escaped narrowly and St Pierre was badly burned, taken to hospital. Loss estimated at $2000.
Constantinople reports that despite assurances from the American minister, Turkey remains reluctant to grant permission for Red Cross delegates to enter Armenia.
London trading opened heavy as news of a treaty between Russia and Turkey and concerns over the Queen’s condition weighed on market sentiment. Dealers reported lower buying and broad selling across major issues, with financials and commodities leading declines.

Natick Rhode Island January 23 burglars entered the post office during the night blowing the safe open and taking about 700 dollars in money and stamps.
Manchester N H January 22 No further new business is to be done by the Granite State Provident association until a full examination of its affairs has been made by bank commissioners. Hon James O Lyford resigned as president along with Gen I F Streeter a director. Lyford cites disagreement on management. A Concord special says Bank Commissioner Walker warned an injunction if new business continues. G Percival Stewart says Lyford resignation does not reflect the company’s financial condition.
Harrisburg January 22 Lawrence Moist a laborer died instantly when dynamite exploded as he tried to thaw a stick by a fire at Bixlee station near Newport. Six other men were badly injured some may die. The injured include Howard I Smith Thos Ragan Henry Wade Innocenzo Buono Filippo Orzetti Domenico Oraetti all expected to recover.
Under Eureka Social club auspices a gathering at Welles hall drew 100 or more listeners. Miss Adelaide E. Noyes directed an evening program featuring Emma P. Kimball L. Anna Ware Ingrid Monson Lottie Walsh Michael Gorman Pansy Sawyer Blanche Marshall Florence Whicher Nora Johnson Mabel Sanborn Mr Jasen William Gilmore.
At a directors meeting on January 22, the New England Telephone and Telegraph company declared a dividend of 1.25 dollars per share. It will be paid on Saturday February 15 to stockholders of record at the close of business Friday January 31 1896. The transfer books close from February 1 to February 15 inclusive.
Sixteen tables at the Highland club whist tournament produced thirty two hands with Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Libbey winning the prizes. Mrs Henry Whitney hosted the Lucille Whist club and captured prizes herself. Other prize-winners included Mrs Henry Battles, Mrs Myra Clinton, E. C. Thompson, Geo. W. Poore and M. S. Gilman.
Miss Arnold schedules a Friday afternoon talk for teachers in the High School hall at 4 30 p m. Her train arrives at Low el about 4 29 leaving a brief window for a social gathering before the lecture, and all are invited to attend.
At a morning directors meeting of the Old Lowell bank, J. M. Tucke was re elected president. The Lowell textile school act was expected to be argued in the supreme court today with City Solicitor Qua John J Pickman and Frederick Lawton traveling to Boston to attend if the case was called.

New York January 22 The American Sugar Refining Company boosted prices by one sixteenth of a cent on nearly all grades as refiners face overselling and strong raw sugar markets at home and abroad. Buyers cannot secure raw sugar at the prior 8 1/2 cent level, with holders seeking higher bids.
A midwinter sale at A G Pollard and Co offers swivel silks remnants at 19 cents per yard, a fraction of the 50 cent market rate. The fabrics, suitable for waists, skirts, and dresses, are described as beautiful and limited in length, promising quick sale.

In police court this morning Joseph King and Zepherin Bergerman were fined ten dollars each for drunkenness after driving furiously around Merrimack street. William Galvin pleaded guilty to drunkenness. Frank E Pecor, 13, was ordered held over till tomorrow on a petty theft. Sternberg case continued.
A Molly Varnum chapter meeting at Mrs. Nesmith’s Park Street home marked the regent’s first time presiding. Delegates chosen for the Washington congress include Mrs. Henry M. Thompson and Mrs. C. E. Adams with Miss Whittier and Mrs. J. N. Bourne as delegate and alternate as the chapter size allows. Tea followed the meeting.
Treffe St Armand and William Chapdelaine were arrested this morning by Inspectors Laflamme and Allen. They are accused of stealing clothing, a clock and small articles from Thomas Dunfey's house on Merrimack Street.
