A gas regulating machine exploded at Frank P. Sfleger & Co in English Merrick block at Orange and Crown streets in New Haven. The building collapsed and burned, causing $100,000 in losses. One man was killed and three others seriously injured. James Hawser, a machinist aged 38, died in the ruins. several boys remain unaccounted for among the debris.
Alfred Hurd of Saco Maine pleaded not guilty in Superior court to murdering his father James M Hurd. Ordered transferred to the state insane asylum at Augusta for expert examination to determine his sanity.
Prof. Daniel G. Eliot will embark from Chicago for Central Africa to advance the Field Columbian Museum’s aims in zoology. He is commissioned to use ample means to make the expedition notable and is expected to spend about six months seeking extinct species and other wildlife for study.

New York woke to the death of General Thomas FE. Ewing who died from injuries sustained when he was struck by a cable car yesterday. The incident occurred in Manhattan, with authorities noting the fatality followed the crash while he was walking near the streetcar line.
At Washington on January 21 John Tyler aged 72, the eldest son of former President Tyler, lies dying at his home in the city.
A Grand Island dispatch reports the Bank of Commerce in Omaha area has shuttered its doors. Capital stock is listed at 150000 with the note indicating the closure despite local operations and inquiries.
Smith and Stoughton, a leading shoe firm, assigned on Monday to Charles W. Fifield of Woburn and Charles H. Edson of Whitman. Liabilities exceed 800000 with assets unknown. Main claims come from Commonwealth Shoe and Leather Co. Whitman National Bank and National Eagle Bank of Boston totaling 44191.28. The firm, led by I. W. Smith and J. E. M. Laconia New Hampshire January 20 insolvency papers were filed against the Halifax Mills Co and Dr J C Moore of Manchester. Dr Moore voiced approval saying the action would stop perceived theft of assets and protect creditors. He pledged to publish documentary evidence of three years of business depression and defended his financial methods as lawful.

Reports from New York on a planned drydock to be built in the harbor. It will be assembled from seven wood and iron sections totaling about 500 feet in length with a 60 foot 6 inch overall length and 116 foot 10 inch beam. The dock will use electricity for pumps, be expandable, cost roughly 800000 dollars, and take about nine months to complete. Existing docks are smaller and cannot accommodate the largest ships.
The funeral of Patrick Shea occurred this morning at 9 o clock from his home at 54 Common Street. Bearers were Michael Devine, Owen Daly, Michael Kennedy, Patrick Kennedy, John Daly and Stephen Castles. Interment followed at the Catholic cemetery.

Budget recommendations total 4000 for pastor, salary, repairs, heating, lighting, and taxes amid notes of ongoing prosperity and harmony.

Miss Adelaide E Noyes will give a Saturday evening entertainment inviting all young women.
Michael Connolly of Coburn street Centralville was arrested after a brutal assault on his wife on Saturday night. He kicked her in the abdomen causing lacerations and internal injuries and possible lasting damage. A physician stated Connolly claimed to have killed her. the wife refused to file charges. If infection does not follow, she may survive but with lifelong scars. The atrocity prompted Fr Scannell to condemn brutality and drunkenness observed in Centralville.
Taft of the Boston and Maine railroad has no official information on any planned changes in local railroad management. Rumors say Taft may supervise freight operations around Lowell while Symonds would oversee passenger traffic from the Boston office. The Lowell freight blockade ends after three weeks of improved handling, and construction progresses on bridges at Lawrence street and Pawtucket street with roofing and flooring underway.
Supreme Chief Ranger Lawrence J. Smith of the Foresters of America spoke to the local court and friends Monday evening. I C Wright, formerly assistant superintendent of the Boston division of New England Telephone and Telegraph, becomes superintendent of the Central division following the death of J W Duxbury. Wright began duties yesterday and brings long experience to the role. He is described as genial and well liked by colleagues.

Inspector Goodwin and Officer Bumps raided a Greek bakeshop in Suffolk Street finding nine men drinking beer among about 40 present. Tumblers and a quart of beer were confiscated. Proprietors Angelo Vootsororis and George Palastefithes pleaded not guilty to illegally selling beer and running a restaurant without a license. case continued to January 23 with $500 bail.
The Common Council and Board of Aldermen meet tonight on salaries. The Mayor plans a salaries committee meeting at seven, intending to settle the year’s salaries. President Webster said he will delay his announcement until the next meeting.
Jan 21 In police court Michael Connolly the man who brutal attacked his wife Saturday night was held in $500 to await Mrs Connollys injuries. Kate Reagan for drunkenness was sent to the workhouse for five months. Angelo [illette obstructing the Street was fined $2 which he paid. Several fines were paid for drunkenness and five first offenders were released.
A party of friends surprised William Ayer at his home 27 Varnum Avenue last evening. Guests from Lowell Dunstable Tyngsboro and Tewksbury enjoyed whist dancing and supper. Abner Butterfield presented an elegant ring and Tennyson Poems on behalf of the group in honor of his birthday.
A handsome new American flag on display at Ellingwood's store window will be presented to Camp Farragut 8. of W. at the union campfire on January 20. The flag is a gift from several local citizens.
