Biddeford sees three thousand Pepperell and Laconia workers and fifteen hundred York mill staff refuse to work, with flat shutdowns and up to twenty percent cuts in some York departments. Boston notes only New Bedford and Biddeford in general strike status while other cities report normal operations and awaiting outcomes. Bur lington Vermont Queé City mills also close indefinitely after refusals.
In Fall River on January 17, all 50 male spinners and spare hands at King Philip Mills walked out, with ring spinners also striking, effectively closing nearly all spinning departments while weavers and other parts of the mill continue operating.
Worcester report says a 10 percent wage reduction took effect today at Linwood cotton mills and Whitinsville mills in Northbridge, plus mills in Uxbridge Grafton and Fisherville affecting workers across several communities.
The body of Albert C. Greenleaf, once a wealthy wholesale merchant of Columbus, Ohio, who killed himself by leaping from the 16th floor of the Masonic Temple, was identified late Saturday night. He had headed Greenleaf & Son, later Bancroft, Sheldon & Co., and his fortune was dissipated after years of drifting to Denver and finally Chicago.
Boston January 17 Robert Alexander a mechanic became insane this morning after his three sons aged eleven seven and five were found dead in bed from suspected gas asphyxiation. The father discovered them at breakfast and investigators think a gas cock was left open by accident.
New York report of a family tragedy notes John Matthews, his wife, and two children aged ten and twelve found dead at their Columbus Avenue residence. Authorities believe Matthews killed his family before taking his own life by a single gunshot. No motive is known.
Mrs. Lucilie Lane daughter of ex Senator Blackburn of Kentucky is alive and improving in Washington on January 17. No bullet location was attempted to be found.
In Littleton Massachusetts on January 16 the 28 weavers at Conant Houghton and Co suspender factory will return to work Monday after reaching a compromise over a two cent per hundred yards cut in elastic web weaving. County commissioners met in session at the courthouse for over an hour but no business was completed. A Tewksbury delegation asked for a road viewed, yet snow and ice would prevent the visit. A commissioner noted the new courthouse project will be finished within the original appropriation.

George W. Cumnock of Woonsocket says his brother Alexander G. Cumnock has not secured a controlling stake in the Appleton Mills and personally owns no Appleton shares. The Appleton company, valued at $500000 with 55000 spindles and 1600 looms, operates two mills producing coarse and colored goods. The Woonsocket Call reported a planned reorganization to run the mills profitably, which Cumnock disputes as unfounded.

The city committee filed its financial statement showing total municipal receipts of 1288 with numerous donors including Gardner W. Pearson and Fisher H. Pearson. Expenditures included carriages 831, registration 150, bands 50, fireworks 21.90, hacks 41, plus a long list of $5 recipients. State campaign receipts totaled 222, with 132.60 spent. Perpetual-care funds amount to 7650. city receipts last year were 4,215,022 with expenditures 3,209,934.92 and a balance of 8057. James McKnight Macrae, aged 33 years 11 months, died Saturday morning after seven years of illness. Born in Prince Edward Island, he is survived by seven brothers and two sisters, with three in the vicinity. He died of pneumonia January 14, 1898, at Westboro Massachusetts, after residing with a brother at 85 Royal Street. Miss Alice S Slattery, aged Sie, was well known in Westboro, Brooklyn, Boston and elsewhere and was buried there. Dr Slattery and his mother died recently. Caroline remains.
The funeral for the late Albert W. Ober of Chelmsford was held Saturday at 1:30 PM from the Baptist Church with Rev. C H Elis and Rev. E C Barnett officiating. The service noted his long Odd Fellows and Good Templars ties and 5 years in a Christian church. A quartet sang selections. arrangements were by RR O Adams of Lowell and bearers included John T McCoy James Patchen and Frank ???

Massachusetts Church Tea dinner set for Thursday night at the Brunswick, Boston. The Herald notes this union as the sole such Episcopal group in the area with broader English Church Union links nationwide led by Rev. Dr. A. St. John Chambre.
