The South Middlesex Unitarian club met at Youngs Hotel with 45 members present. Rev John Cuckson read The Church and the Masses. William H Baldwin spoke. officers elected: President Archibald M Howe Cambridge Vice President Rev Hilary Bygrave Belmont Secretary Herbert C Hale Weston Treasurer Harrison C Wells Wayland Executive Committee members listed.
A gathering at 46 Wilder street hosted Miss Daisy Tanner last evening. Friends presented her a gold ring through Miss Bertha Varnum. After games, refreshments followed and the Braden quartette provided music. The four brothers plan a tour through New York.
The Ladies Royal whist club met with Mrs. Mary Swett and her brother Thomas T. Shurtleff at Sheldon and Gates streets last night. Prizes went to A. L. Macrae, Charles K. Miller, Mrs. Joseph Hicks, and Mrs. Frank Spicer. Mrs. L. C. Spear and Mrs. Henry Whitney assisted at supper. Mrs. Whitney and Frank Stearns provided piano music.
Willard Everett and Dr Thomas Azro H Schoolcraft Dr Martin Andrew G Swapp and Dr Rix supervisor of music traveled to Manchester Wednesday to inspect the American musical system recently introduced into the schools Manchester schoolmen are enthusiastic over the new system.
Worn boiler pipes in City Hall have been replaced with new ones. Three additional lockers are under construction in the ante-room to the council chamber for use by the three extra councilmen.

Clothing near a stove in H. M. Keith’s house at 26 D street caught fire at 5 40 last night. The blaze drew a fire department alarm from box 83, but damage was not great and attendance was deemed desirable.
The state association of builders was formed in Boston yesterday with officers: President A. Vaughan of Worcester, vice president Frank L. Weaver of Lowell, secretary W. H. Layard of Boston, and treasurer E. Noyes Whitcomb of Boston.
Mr Irenee Mireau of the Mer rimack corporation is credited with entertaining triplets born since Monday night. The three boys are siblings to two other children of the Mireau household, all within a single family unit.
In Woonsocket on January 16, the Alice Rubber Works, part of the U S Rubber Co, with 1300 workers, closed due to dull business. The Millville Works, employing 1000 workers, followed suit for the same reason, signaling a regional slowdown in rubber production.
In Chatham an unidentified schooner sank half a mile west of Pollock Rip. The William Wilson of New York was sighted as the vessel, with masts visible this morning. A life saving crew found no one aboard, and it is believed a tug towing the Nottingham caused the collision, with the crew saved.
From Apia aboard the steamship Mariposa the report says Samoa's business leaders have risen against President Schmidt. Also noted is ongoing volcanic activity at Honolulu with lava lake rising two feet.
Oklahoma City reports Jaques' store robbed and horses stolen by four outlaws on Tuesday. A vigilance committee pursued, overtook them after a long chase, one outlaw shot in a skirmish, and the other three were captured and hanged to a tree.
Despatches from Havana report Cuban insurgents severing most links to the interior leaving only a short Havana to Mariano railroad line as the sole remaining connection. The move increases isolation of Havana amid ongoing unrest.
The Democratic National Committee set July 7 as the national convention date. An opposing motion for June 2 failed to gain support.
Florence lodge I O G T held a welcoming program at the lower town hall in North Chelmsford on Wednesday evening. Past Chief Templar Harry Richardson presided as speakers from Lowell and North Chelmsford praised the lodge formed last October with nineteen members. A quartet, dances, songs, and readings followed, with Rev. S Briant addressing liquor evils. Proceeds from refreshment boxes were raised, aided by visitors from Lowell, including Wirene lodge.

The trial of Captain Anthony D. Mitten for conduct unbecoming an officer began at the South Armory in Irvington Street Boston. Judge advocate Captain Bangs led the case as defense counsel William H Bent pressed jurisdiction demurrers and embezzlement questions while witnesses including Charles F Young testified about a 60 bill for decorating and related receipts with the court to reconvene January 23 at 5 PM.
A warrant to Francis D. Munn Jr calls a special meeting next Thursday at 7 50 PM to consider six articles. Members will vote on new members Hiram R. Blanchard and others, address finances, pastor status, potential church property actions, and by law amendments. Prudential Committee members Shaw Merrill Martin Drewett sign the warrant.
Major E J Noyes and Superintendent John J Hart recovered between 400 and 500 yards of cloth and towelling stolen by Eugene S Hodge at Littleton. His agent Mrs Drew surrendered the goods and later returned items sold to neighbors. About 40 kegs of nails also were recovered from a local carpenter who had bought them from Hodge. most of the stolen property has been returned.

In Suffolk Superior Court before Judge Lilley the case of F. H. Prince versus John Lennon proceeds. Prince seeks $4566 claimed as due from a 200 share West End Lando stock transaction, while Lennon denies purchasing or authorizing the purchase.
The Philharmonic club will present its first concert of the season tonight at Associate hall. The program features a well chosen selection with accomplished soloists assisting the ensemble.

Citizens report dilapidated and shaky guards of the Western Canal bridges on Merrimack and Moody streets. Complaints filed. City Messenger Cahill alerted the street department to the hazard, but no repairs were made by the city or Locks & Canals company.
Postmaster Pearson to establish an additional sub-office February 1 in Middlesex Village with a clerk salary of 100 dollars, lower than prior cancellation fees. Tree delivery delayed. Petitions filed for sub-stations at Wigginsville and the Navy Yard.
Keene New Hampshire brakeman George Tully aged 32 was run over by a freight train on School Street last night. He slipped beside the train and fell beneath the wheels. Tully was taken to St John’s Hospital where his right leg was amputated above the knee.
