The health department reports no new smallpox cases after a recent outbreak and exposure windows have expired for most. Nine hospital inmates remain, three are attendants. Gorham Street engine house plans prompt potential temporary fire station relocation. Early morning blaze at three story lodging house Nos 11 to 19 Causeway Street Boston caused excitement among inmates. Fire damaged the building to about $7000 and rescue operations saved several people found in night attire on upper floors.
The three masted British bark Caithnesshire under Captain Furneaux rode a fierce gale to within fifteen fathoms of water near Vancouver. With both anchors lost and 200 fathoms of chain gone, the crew braced for a wrecking. A sudden wind shift from the northwest urged the ship away from the shore, saving vessel and crew from destruction.
Washington January 10 The House commerce committee examined Pacific cable plans. George G Ward vice president of Commercial Pacific Cable described contracts for a Honolulu link by November 1 and a Manila extension within two years. Project cost estimated at 10 to 12 million dollars with Manila at one dollar per word and Honolulu at 35 to 50 cents.
F Ceilley of St. Louis, AFL organizer, was warned by a mayor and 21 business leaders to stop forming separate black and white unions. He has ceased organizing negroes, says AFL supports black unionization and intends to continue efforts to improve conditions, though he will work among whites for now.
A News special from Phoenix reports Padre, a Yuma medicine man, was offered as a sacrifice to the spirits under tribal customs to atone for sins linked to a disease epidemic. He fled to the mountains but returned begging mercy, was bound and taken to Mexico where he was tortured to death. The tribe, though he was beloved, followed the ritual. Burns punished in early rounds, Everitt knocked down repeatedly as Hawkins defeats Queenan in Seattle, and Neil beats Donovan in Los Angeles in 20 rounds.

President Brainerd states the Euclid Trust and Savings Company is solvent and depositors will not lose funds held in trust. He cites stringency in financial circles that prevented meeting heavy commercial demands and notes large withdrawals by many small banks during year end. The resulting assignment followed.
In Boston on January 10 Mary MacCantry publicly renounced all claim to her husband Joseph Biggins in the municipal criminal court during his bigamy trial. Biggins kept two nearly adjacent homes for 10 years, hiding the second marriage from both wives. The ruling set $800 bond for Superior Court action as police uncovered the dual households and the confession followed.
The National Board of Arbitration met in New York with P T Powers H M Sexton J H Farrell J H O Rourke and T H Murnane present. They were authorized to fix salary limits for the minor leagues. Powers Farrell and Sexton will attend a Western league meeting in Kansas City next week to address the dispute between the Western league and the American association.
Boston, Jan 11 Thirty five true bills and ten no bills were reported by the Suffolk county grand jury. Michael Manfra faces murder charges for a Nov 23 North End killing by a knife. Rhoda Reade is indicted for jewelry larceny valued at 1200 from a Back Bay woman. Roxbury’s James F McCluskey is charged with assault with intent to murder his wife.
Louis Bitzer of Turners Falls faced a district court in Greenfield for the murder of his young son Louis Martin Bitzer and his clerk Ida Colombe on December 31, 1901. The government sought a continuance to January 2, and the court ordered the date extended. Bitzer appeared calm amid a large court-yard crowd watching him enter the building.
In Salt Lake City on Friday night at the Salt Lake Athletic Club Jimmy Burns of Spokane defeated Mexican Pete Everitt by KO in the 13th round. The contest showcased Burns' power and clinched a decisive victory for the visiting fighter.

Cambridge January 11. Oliver F. Cutts Harvard right tackle for 1901 is declared a professional after evidence showed he taught private boxing for pay while at Haverford. Prof. Hollis says the case changes Harvard’s amateur status ruling and a college wide explanation will go out as reparation.
In a Lowell police court session Judge Hadley dealt with several men cited for drunkenness and nonpayment of support. Arthur Santry, with six children, was placed on probation to ensure future support. Peter Ferry faced prior larceny and nonpayment records and received a three month jail sentence, then state farm confinement. Patrick Gallagher, from Gloucester via Concord, was arrested for drunkenness and given a state farm sentence on appeal. John Nolan paid a $2 fine.
Engineer John M Wisker arrested after Wednesday's New York Central tunnel wreck showed improved condition and potential for bail. Jefferson M Levy and C C Paulding offered to post bail though coroner would not accept from the railroad. Officials noted all injured recovering as well as could be expected and Wisker may return to work in railroad yards upon release.

United States Judge Wing appointed Albion B. Lang of Toledo as receiver for the Lake Shore Electric Railway, following an application by Valentine Clark Co. of Chicago. The Lake Shore line is part of the Everett Moore system.
A federal report shows Boston postal receipts at 356,948 in December, up 11.5 percent from 1900. Massachusetts cities Lowell Worcester Springfield also posted gains, while Chicago led with a 23 percent rise and New York up about 14 percent. Only Jersey City New Haven and Dayton declined.
Burglars forced a front door at George W Ducey’s grocery in Dracut Friday morning and took about 10 cents in copper coins along with cigars cigarettes and chewing gum. The safe was attempted but the dial was broken. James Flannigan and Fred Crowley, street railway employees, saw a light and alerted Ducey. On returning they found the burglars had fled before Lowell police were notified.
