John O Neil Jr was executed at Franklin county jail for the Buckland murder of Mrs Hattie Evelyn McCloud on January 8, 1897. At 10 41 a.m the drop released, the neck broke, and he died instantly after a calm final confession and forgiveness. His body was taken to Olburne Falls for burial.
San Quentin prison January seventh. Theodore Durrant faces execution as his family waits near the prison. His lawyer seeks a writ of habeas corpus in Washington, but the Supreme Court refuses to stay the sentence. Durrant declares he will die as a Roman Catholic and maintains resolve amid the last hours.
The Drop Fell. San Quentin California January 7. Theodore Durrant was hanged at 10 35 a.m. Local authorities confirmed the execution carried out in the prison yard ending the long murder case surrounding Durrant.
London reports Edward J. Ratcliffe the actor, jailed in New York for wife beating, married in London to Caroline Ravenhill daughter of a fishmonger in Marylebone. His father corroborates the Daily Mail tale while denying Alice De Lacy as his son's wife, recounting a 1891 note asking for the boy’s schooling.
Montreal reports year end gains for the Canadian Pacific of 3 365 196 over last year with December week up 106 000. Grand Trunk shows near 800 000 annual gain and December 111 700. Banks note improved paper demand and widespread prosperity boosts western expansion and Molson bank plans new branches in Victoria Vancouver Revelstoke and Edmonton.
Annie Du Pont, 13, adopted by Mr and Mrs Frank Gauvin, was shot in Westville New Hampshire by 20 year old Joseph Peltier. It was ruled accidental though Peltier claimed the gun was discharged. The girl suffered a wound to the right leg above the knee and was taken for surgical care. Both families are described as respectable with no prior trouble reported.
The Republican State Committee met in Boston on Thursday afternoon and reelected officers A P Goetting of Springfield as chairman Thomas Talbot of Billerica as secretary Randolph C Surbridge of Cambridge as assistant secretary Joseph W Peterson of Salem as treasurer and B H Woodsum of Braintree as chairman of the executive committee.
An alarm from box 145 reported a house fire on Smith street owned by J. A. Coram. Evergreen decorations near a gas jet started the blaze, quickly controlled by firefighters.
Horticultural assistants put to work while Col James W Bennett tightens payroll and ends Sunday labor. Mayor Bennett orders department heads to stop Sunday work, review contracts, and discharge Huntington Hall staff. Nelson Desrosiers, about 28, died at St John’s Hospital after ingesting Paris green at a Merrimack street drug store. He bought the poison under a false name, stayed at the Merrimack house, and died at 8:30 PM following ambulance transport from 89 Campau street. He leaves a wife and no children. Desrosiers had been a weaver, previously jailed after a barroom altercation, and had recently returned to Lowell from Lawrence.
Judge Hadley handled a light docket with two juvenile larceny cases involving Alexander Patrick and John Hart over rocks from Hamilton mills. Patrick found guilty and sent to Lyman school. Hart case on file.

Eliza H. Hlussey died at 14 Burnside street at age 67. Mary Kelty died at the city hospital yesterday. D. S. O'Brien and Humphrey O'Sullivan are in New York on business. Albert H. Marston of this city has been granted a patent on an oil groove cutting machine.
