In police court this morning John Ward was jailed six months at the state farm for drunkenness. Edward Nadow was fined three dollars for drunkenness. Andrew Wheelock violated the city ordinance and failed to appear. Jean B. Derochers was charged with indecent conduct near Mt. Vernon and Mt. Washington streets and received six months in jail.
Mary Chamberlain aged 97 died at her home 117 Fulton Street yesterday. She was a native of Rockland Maine.
Philadelphia January 7 The new U S battleship Indiana made her maiden voyage this morning. She will sail to Newport then join Admiral Bunce s fleet at Hampton Roads. Afterwards she will proceed to Port Royal South Carolina The Indiana carried 500 tons of ammunition and 90 days rations.
Chicago police arrest Michael Spiro on dynamite assault charge for the Hazelton Pa explosion that killed a family member on June 26, 1804. He fled after the blast and eluded capture until now.
In Wichita on January 7, vast prairie fires burn across Stafford and Kiowa counties. Flames light the sky, visible up to 500 miles away as fires burn 150 miles apart. Numerous families abandon homes and flee for their lives as the blaze reaches across the plains.
Washington reports acting Portuguese minister Senor Taverra received word that Gungenhama and his son, leaders of the rebellion, were captured by Capt. Moshimo and Portuguese troops at Mozambique. The capture is believed to end the uprising.
Tracey W. Douglass alias C. O. Davis, the Peru bank cashier who defaulted, has been captured in New York state and will be returned to Des Moines. He fled with between $15,000 and $18,000.

In Indianapolis Patrick Galvin fatally shot Samuel Paugh and Mollie Murphy, then was killed by Mollie’s husband W. B. Murphy. Paugh, staying with the Murphys, did not know Galvin. After shooting Paugh, Galvin entered Murphy’s home and killed Mollie. Murphy wrestled Galvin and fatally shot him as he tried to flee. Murphy surrendered, with authorities noting possible temporary insanity.
Last night at 6 a highway robbery occurred after Turkish workers left the Lawrence mill. Omeer Abbe struck Jussep, knocked him down, and stole $10 and a watch. In court the Turks appeared ferocious. through an Armenian interpreter they learned the case was continued to Wednesday. Abbe was held in $500.
A vestry meeting at High Street church last night wound up the Belvidere Union Mission school. The board of officers was re elected and the school will cease to exist in April, its functions to be turned over to the Y M C A.

Alder man George H Tryder recalls a confusion over the Central bridge jumping victim. A post card signed John IE Newhall denies the death by self harm and asks for further contact to reveal information of interest to Tryder and his wife.

A three story wooden building at Middlesex and King streets owned by Samuel Farsons was badly damaged by fire and water yesterday forenoon. Alarms sounded at 10 30 but fire gained headway before arrival. cold and access problems slowed efforts. Fire risked the St Cloud hotel adjoining. Fire started on the second floor and climbed to the roof, taking two and a half hours to extinguish. Stores on the lower floor Mills Bros periodicals and barber Daniel Emery were damaged mainly by water. The building is insured. Mills Bros carry 4000 with F W Sherman & Co. Six or seven tenants, all French, lived there plus a boarding house keeper. two on King street suffered only slight damage while those in the mid block faced greater losses between 200 and 400 dollars.

A loaded revolver and a knife are found in her satchel during search, Varin claiming six months of jealousy and a fixed trigger.
Tomorrow evening the Democratic city committee for 1896 will meet at Jackson hall to organize by electing officers. The chair contest pits James H. Carmichael against Fisher H. Pearson, with Pearson seeking a third term. Secretary contenders are John I. Tully Thomas H. Muldoon and Frank P. Murphy. Treasurer and vice chairman have no opponents yet to James I Owens and Frank J. Simonds. Owens will serve as temporary chairman.
Yesterday brought three still alarms in rapid succession. A chimney fire on Moody street owned by H. B. Hill caused no damage. A spark touched shingles near Middlesex and Branch streets with trifling damage. A small blaze from a defective fireplace at Dr Warner’s Kirk street office also caused only minor damage.
