Contagious Disease Hospital Order Delayed by Council

Collided English and Spanish ships sink off Aveiro
The British steamer Alfonso and Spanish steamer Vilelva collided at night off Aveiro Portugal on January 4. Both sank. Eighteen British crewmen and one Spanish sailor drowned. Twenty four Vilelva crew members and the British captain were rescued and landed at Matto Linhos. The Alfonso, built 1878 in Sunderland, 1325 gross tons, 872 net tons, 246.5 feet long, 31.9 feet beam, 17.4 feet depth, owned by Steamship Alfonso Company Limited of Liverpool. The Vilelva appears to be a Spanish coaster with no registered record.

Court list short as 21 drunks crowd Monday docket
A small Monday court list disposed in under an hour with 21 drunks. Ulysses S Lund jailed at the State farm after a conditionally lenient sentence. John Carney asked for a pledge condition and explained his family needs. Officers testified he was intoxicated and could have frozen outside. Judge Hadley warned against liquor warmth and placed Carney under Slattery supervision with possible farm penalty. Thomas Reynolds and George Gearin 17 pleaded guilty to breaking and entering at a Grand View cottage and were each ordered to $300 for the superior court. HB McVey represented the boys.

Adelina Couture aged 16 has run away from 15 Cabot street with a man opposed by her parents. They have reported the disappearance to Lowell police with a description and requests to locate her. Suspected Burglar Captured by Lowell Police
Lowell officers J W Tilton and William G Bumps stopped Thomas Kay on Central street and took him to the station after spotting him with alarm clocks and a quilt. Kay, 24, claimed South Carolina origins and arrival in Boston that morning, saying the items belonged to him and he had brought them from there. Police seek the rightful owner and lodging-house victim to recover the property.

Liberty Bell Heads to Charleston Exposition
In Philadelphia on January 6 the Liberty Bell, escorted by Mayor Ashbridge and city officials, began its journey to the Charleston exposition. A 2 gun salute fired as the special train departed from the Pennsylvania Station. The bell is due to reach Charlestown next Thursday at 10 o’clock.
