San Francisco January 4 Attorneys for Durrant visited Governor Budd and urged executive interference in the slander suit case where Durrant is a key witness. The decision is reserved. Durrant has rehearsed his death scene and asked that the rope be destroyed and no autopsy. His father holds Blancher’s confession to the Lamont and Williams murders for a final stay bid.
London Ontario officials report no additional victims found in city hall ruins as of morning. the injury toll rises to hundreds with many in serious condition and a long list of injured individuals remains.
Bob Fitzsimmons and attorney Martin Hughes clashed in a Sheboygan bar room Monday night. Charles Seaman and comedian Edward McDaniels were also involved. Hughes lies in a precarious condition with doubts about recovery after McDaniels allegedly struck him, following criticism of Fitzsimmons's show.
Fire destroyed the house owned by Henry J. Mailloux and his mother in Pelham New Hampshire off Bridge street. Discovered at 8 30 am by neighbors while occupants were in Lowell. Total loss included 300 in furniture and 400 in stock and utensils. no insurance.
In Massachusetts incidents, James Dennison of West Newton near 60 was fatally struck crossing tracks at a station Monday night. Frank Bowker of Dorchester Bay died after being struck by a railroad train December 30. August Reinhardt, crossing Roslindale tracks Saturday night, died from injuries at Massachusetts General Hospital. Mrs. Charles Trowbridge died from burns at Boston City Hospital after an incident at Oak Place last Monday. her husband perished from burns Friday night.
The Royal Arcanum plans officer installations for Centralville Council No 1721 at Odd Fellows hall and Industry Council No 1722 at Knights of Columbus hall with initiations and speeches. Centralville reports 39 members and six applications. Industry shows 63 members and eight applications. North Billerica Council No 1323 installation to follow at Thomas Talbot Memorial hall.
Lowell and North Billerica Councils prepare installation ceremonies with district officials, dinners, and musical entertainments. Highland Council plans January rites as 311 members, 19 applications, join Massachusetts total of 18 000 and U S 195 000.
In Hadley court this morning nine drunks appeared. seven were let off with light fines or release. Fred L. Dam was sent to Bridgewater state farm for eight months for drunkenness. Al ice McCarty, a young woman, received a three month term at the workhouse. Harry F. Tierney, part of an organized gang of sneak thieves, faced charges for stealing an overcoat from a Powell street room during a party. The coat, a new one bought by John C. Wilby that day, was allegedly pawned after a fictitious tale of a mysterious stranger. The judge pursued no further questioning and found Tierney guilty, sentencing him to six months in jail.
Heating efforts at the Carter Street School failed again when H. H. Wilder & Co. workers tried to raise temperatures to proper levels. By 9:30 a.m. the building housed rooms between 48 and 59 degrees, and with uncertainty about warmth, pupils were sent home.
Chelmsford lodge of Good Templars met at Odd Fellows hall in Chelmsford Centre with a well attended gathering. Richard Boyd won the sewing contest and Miss Bertha Ober the nailing contest. Members voted to visit Graniteville lodge on Feb 9 and committees were appointed to act on the death of sister member Mrs Jones.
The city council resumed after lunch and held multiple ballots for chairman and other offices. Goward and Peirce led in several rounds while Libby was elected to the water board and Avery Marshall remained as superintendent of streets, with further ballots planned for the afternoon session.
The reassembled common council fixed regular meeting dates as the first and third Tuesday, read and adopted highway surveyor nominations, and approved a one million dollar tax anticipation loan. Ballots elected Cleveland J. Cheney, George L. Fowler, John P. Mahoney, C. F. Going, August Fels, and a city solicitor, with others laid on the table or referred.
The new mayor appoints J. W. W. Tilton as temporary head of the commons and Frank W. Hall as private secretary. James W. Bennett plans aldermanic notification later and hints at a clerk for the committee. The fight to remove Supt. George L. Fowler from the street department continues amid Republican-Democratic tensions. There is talk of trimming the constable list as lawyers request fewer appointments. A trousers sale at 166 Centre Street features bulk bargains on all wool garments.
Mrs Josephine M Ayer widow of Dr James C Ayer died suddenly at her Paris home after a brief illness. She had long resided in Paris and known for munificence in Lowell where the Ayer Home for Young Women and Children stands in her honor. Her recent gift to the Old Ladies Home was noted, and her quiet charity touched many beyond her circle.
Funerals conducted from 80 Walnut street this morning as James McLaughlin’s high mass was celebrated at St Peter’s Church at 9 with Fr Mul len and deacons. Soloists Louise Laughlin and James Donnelly performed, De Profundis sung, bearers named, and burial in Catholic cemetery.
The burial took place at Lowell cemetery under J. B. Currier with a brief committal service. Rev. Charles L. Merriam officiated as the Willow Dale home stead mourners gathered. The First Baptist quartet sang. undertaker Young directed the service. bearers included Frank Bowers, Jewett Bowers, and sons Jonathan and George.
Miles Gray of 106 Rock Street reports being led missing recently but has returned from a visit to Boston. Miss Hilda Lee Drew has been enjoying the holidays with friends in New York and will spend the remaining two weeks with friends in Washington and Baltimore.
