In Chicago on January 1 a coal teamsters strike looms as winter grips the city. Workers demand wage increases and threaten to halt all coal deliveries unless owners sign the raise pact. The stoppage would disrupt shipments and worsen hardship for the poor, with schools already short on coal ahead of the cold spell.
In a seven hour secret meeting January first Chicago and eight other clubs decided to break the National League agreement and form a rival circuit.
