A merchant discovers a stranger in his cellar who claims to be the gas man checking the month’s consumption. The exchange ends with relief as the merchant fears a burglar. Another anecdote features Sala in Australia recounting a mispronounced coronation scene, interrupted by a blunt heckler who supplies the punchline.
The Fifth Street Baptist church held its annual meeting with reports showing paid bills and a treasury balance. Officers and committees were selected for the coming year including clerk H R Wilder and treasurer J B Brown. Rev I H B Hadley of Roslindale was hired to lead revival services starting January 5, noted for plain Scripture delivery and ten years evangelistic work in New England. The Pastor's Aid Society hosted an event to ring in the new year, presenting Rev Millington an oak dictionary stand.
The High Street church Sunday school held its annual New Year's tea party in the vestry with a large turnout. Mrs. Carl D. Burtt and Mrs. FE K. Humphrey served supper, while entertainment included piano solo by Miss Colburn, readings by Miss Ethel Grierson and Mr. Samuel N. Wood Jr of Newton, songs by Mrs. LL Whitman, graphophone by Mr. A W Pond, and a Father Time appearance by Deacon Joshua Clark. Boxes of confectionery were distributed to intermediate and primary children to close the event.
In Boston January 1 the Republican caucus for the House nominated George T. Sleeper for clerk, defeating incumbent Edward A. McLaughlin 189 to 76 with 4 for F. W. Kimball. The House backed Sleeper 122 to 108, while the Senate chose George D. Lawrence as president and H. D. Coolidge as clerk.
The Cunard steamer Cephalonia from Boston Dec 21 ran onto the South Stack reef in fog near Holy Head Wales. It was floated with no life-boat aid needed, 40 passengers landed safely, but the vessel suffered heavy damage.
One man was killed and two injured when an Illinois Central train rear ended a Chicago limited inside a railway tunnel near St. Louis. The engine and two cars were wrecked.
At midnight Brooklyn expanded its city limits across Kings county abolishing the board of supervisors. The city and county will be governed by aldermen, replacing the previous county government after 250 years of incorporation.
A second tremor rattled Chariton Missouri late yesterday following an earlier quake on October 21. Distinct vibrations were reported in St Louis area and nearby locations as residents felt the shocks anew.
Boston on January 1 reports limited public celebration with banks closed yet ordinary business activity continuing. The note adds that New Year's Day is not widely celebrated locally, though commerce proceeds as normal.
Liverpool reports KE D Fish, a stock broker, was found dead by the Mersey early this morning following a collapse on the stock exchange yesterday. The death appears linked to the prior market tumble. PoliceInvestigation underway to determine cause and circumstances.

William Goyette woke at 3 30 am to a roof blaze at Riverside Park in Tewksbury. He evacuated his family and alerted Lowell fire department. Firefighters arrived to find the house doomed and a total loss likely started by the chimney.
The street department operates normally with Supt Crowley in charge. Assistant Supt Brousseau has returned from vacation and remains only in that role. No surface signs indicate anything unusual today.

Hunt heirs sold Walker place estate to Daniel Gage of Lowell. Emerson recovering from cold but then taken ill with grip. Postmaster Hills and tax collector W S Gordon partially back at duties. Primary class at School No 2 and Miss Hadley show good presentation. Odd Fellows building progress includes cornerstone laid. plan to house two stores on first floor and lodge offices upstairs. Building committee named Riley Davis, Frank C Byam, and Howard H Chamberlin.
January sessions report several drunkenness fines for first offenders and six month terms for two men in state prison and workhouse. Owen Fahey jailed five months for assault on his seven year old daughter after abuse described by a nurse and wife. Other cases include clock theft adjourned, slash wound case continued, and a man fined twenty dollars for assault. Richardson pleads guilty to breaking out of city farm two years prior with another man. he served ten days of a six month sentence and is held for the grand jury.
A New Year’s feast in Huntington hall hosted 600 invited boys and girls from local papers, with Mayor Courtney funding hall costs and D L Page Co supplying turkey and pies. The event drew police presence, a civically supported crowd, and joyful scenes as 500 pounds of turkey and 700 pies fed all in attendance.
The annual Board of Trade meeting in Central Brock elected a new board of directors for 1896 focusing on finances and Lowell’s manufacturing interests. The list includes J. W. G. Pickering, E. D. Holden, A. G. Cumnock, A. S. Lyon, A. G. Pollard, Geo. A. Marden, I. M. Tucker, R. Simpson and others. The board will choose officers including president and vice president.
Report notes forces outside the council are trying to derail the plan to elect Herbert E. Webster as president next week. The councilmen’s stance is not the issue. opposition comes from outsiders unfriendly to Webster. Whether the effort gains momentum remains for the councilman to assess.
Miss Lucy Stott was formally presented to society at a grand party hosted by Mrs. Richard Kitson in Mechanics Hall. Decor by William Chester Chase featured green and white Grecian styling with laurel arches, Corinthian columns, and fresh flowers from Patten & Co. Guests included ushers and a receiving party of Stott family members and Boston and Brookline figures. Cheney’s Orchestra provided music as dancing started at 10 with a midnight surprise.
