Fearful Park Avenue hotel fire claims eighteen dead

A massive blaze began in the 71st regiment armory then spread to the Park Avenue hotel in New York on February 22. Eighteen people died and over fifty were injured as flames and smoke forced guests onto ledges and through windows. Fire victors included Col. Charles L. Burdett, Mrs. Charlotte Bennett, and others.

Expressman injured when furniture wagon tips in Tewksbury

John Richards a 58 year old expressman suffered a fracture of the left leg after his furniture wagon tipped over in Tewksbury on Friday. He was brought to the city and taken to his home at 44 Bartlett street for treatment.

Lowell overseer Allen Dodge attempts suicide with poison

Allen Dodge aged about 65, an overseer at Lowell Machine Shop, tried to end his life with two vials of liquid strychnine at his 353 Westford Street home after two months of illness and acute melancholia. A drug clerk’s suspicions led to pursuit and rescue. emetics and a stomach pump saved him. He remains in weak condition but likely to recover.

Death on Train: Bangor Clerk Found Dead of Self Inflicted Wound

W S Sykes a 25 year old clerk for John Ross Son lumber operators was found dead in a toilet aboard the Bangor and Aroostook train. A revolver lay beside him and a letter to W G Ball New York was found in his pocket. Employer says accounts are straight and suggests illness and despondency from consumption led to the tragedy.

Five Years in Jail for Manslaughter in New Bedford

Taunton Feb 21 Five years in the house of correction at New Bedford was the sentence today by Judge Jabez Fox for Mrs Elizabeth Margaret Mowbry who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the drunken row that killed her husband John A Mowbry in New Bedford last December Dr Emanuel Harris of Fall River received two years in the house of correction for embezzling 3200 from the order of Druids of which he was grand treasurer He admitted guilt and made restitution of 1802

Requiem Mass for Knights of Columbus Held at St Michael's

A requiem mass for Knights of Columbus members was celebrated at St Michael's church Centralville with Rev Fr Walsh and Rev Fr James M Doran delivering sermons. Doran urged Lent reflection repentance and adherence to Catholic principles while honoring departed members.
