Washington reports full success in Barton’s efforts to distribute alms to Armenia’s sufferers. In Washington on February 18 the fifth annual DAR congress opened behind closed doors with a large, bright crowd of women from almost every state. Mrs. John W. Foster presided as president general, the session focused on reorganizing the congress, an invocation by Mrs. Harry Heth followed by The Star Spangled Banner, and Foster delivering the annual address in response by Mrs. Wilbur of Rhode Island.
Berlin reports the Nord Deutsch Allgemeine Zeitung states Germany will reconsider restrictions on American insurance companies. The decision follows two firms pressing to show Prussian regulations fail to meet current case requirements.
Money deposited in the savings department of the Traders National Bank at 30 Middlesex Street and 11 Post Office Avenue on or before Tuesday March third will draw interest at four percent per annum from March first. Interest may be withdrawn or added to the principal on the first days of July and January. Bank open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m. William F. Hills, Cashier.
James H. Keefe presided and C. F. McCarthy was secretary at the Dracut caucus Tuesday night to nominate candidates for the town meeting. Nominations included Selectmen George F. Heland Nicholas Gallagher Jr. and George W. Ducy town clerk John G. Hubbard treasurer Roswell P. Fox constable and collector of taxes Franklin P. Fox auditor B. J. Cullinan and school committee George M. Clark and John C. Tully.
In Effingham Illinois Gustave Ganlin son of a Woonsocket business man is jailed on forged check charges involving the Security Trust company. A Lowell woman Minnie Hutchins who traveled with him learned his identity after turning on him and keeping the money she received. She left him in Chicago and returned home unaware of the forged checks.
Captain J H Garvey lands in Houston recounting his voyage from Key West aboard the Vesta on Oct 16 with arms and lard for Cuban insurgents. Chased by a Spanish man of war near Cuba he beach ed the ship and burned it then joined the insurgents with eight crew. He claims Cuban forces have the Spaniards whipped and urges an advance on Havana. He notes regular money and ammunition from this country and disputes Spanish victory reports.
Winnipeg on February 19 saw strong reaction as the Greenway government’s plan to secularize all schools draws voices from Protestant and Catholic clergy who denounce the move as creating godless schools.
The Oxford sanitarium and a Turkish bath were damaged by a morning fire in St Joseph Missouri causing about 50 000 in losses. Chicago drummer John Silvey was rescued with difficulty from the flames.
The twentieth dog show of the Kennel Club opened at Madison Square Garden in New York on February 19 with 1610 entries ready for judging.
A gas explosion at the Vulcan mine in Newcastle Colo blanked a 100 foot square shaft hole just before noon. Ed Welsh was killed at the tunnel mouth and timber debris was hurled into the Grand river. A double wedding occurred yesterday in the chapel of the Oblate Fathers on Merrimack Street with Fr. Lamothe officiating. The couples were J. B. D. Jacques and Maria Desrosiers, witnessed by Dr. Hurtubise and Ferdinand Desrosiers, and Joseph E. Brochu of Biddeford with Corrine St. Denis of Lowell, witnessed by M. St. Denis and S. Boure.

Sewers and drains, roads and bridges, paupers, commons and printing and advertising ran deficits totaling $3898.02, $10198.66, $10798.53, $622.10, $9124.15 and $546.15 respectively, while other departments retain credit balances.

Clarence Murphy charged with embezzlement in 129 counts from Salem Savings bank pleaded not guilty in criminal court and was held on $20,000 bail with William D. Northend as counsel. In Topeka a man unveiled a straw and wood pulp paper brick promising cheaper pavement and walls using Kansas wheat straw to pave New England towns.
February 19 report shows two offenders released and one fined. Mary Driscoll received four months in jail for drunkenness in a routine police court session.
Black Creek New York resident and former postmaster D Wiley suffered rheumatism and walked with canes until using Chamberlains Pain Balm. He reports great improvement, discarded his canes, and praises the liniment as more helpful than all prior medicines. Sold for 50 cents a bottle by Ellingwood & Co.
Les Miserables top division champs of the Massachusetts Bowling League despite a 910 to 883 defeat by Boston Athletic Association on home lanes. Les Miserables, formed in 1884 with John B Swift as captain, finished the season as first division champions after rising from the third division in 1880s. The club, once based in Barristers hall, hopes to prevail in a roll-off against division leaders.
A Lowell to Wilmington electric car on the Lowell and Lynn line collided near Wilmington at 10 this morning during a blinding snow storm. The front end was smashed, 17 passengers were thrown about, Charles Doherty of Lowell was seriously hurt, and both motormen suffered injuries. Wreckers cleared the line and service reopened early afternoon.
In Cambridge yesterday Judge Sheldon ordered Charles Edwards to the house of correction for a term between three and six years based on conduct. He was convicted of brutal assault and robbery of Riley near the First street car house months earlier after a Lowell trial and heavy bonds.
Of 58 candidates in civil service exams for police admission, 43 passed, a 65 percent success rate. Those named must report to the city physician for examination, including John H. Condon, John L. Huse, Michael R. Histon and 30 others.
Officer Redmond Welch spotted Louis Jaquith and Ernest Beausoleil acting suspiciously near Merrimack and Moody streets.
