Report from Seoul on the battle off Chemulpo in which the Russian cruiser Variag and the gunboat Korietz were lost. Japanese forces engaged, Variag and Korietz abandoned and destroyed. several Allied ships assisted with medical aid. Russian casualties included 80 dead and 7 officers.
About 160 to 170 claims from the Riverside park explosion last summer have been settled by the Burke and Corbett law firm. John C. Burke told the Courier-Citizen that the firm aims to settle all cases on a reasonable basis and that the heaviest claims have been disposed of to general satisfaction. Many settlements involve claims with and without legal counsel. thousands of dollars have been expended though exact amounts were not disclosed. The Owens and Bent cases remain pending.
A sale advertises winter footwear including womens warm shoes beaver cloth and wool lined slippers and buckskin with lace and congress. All winter goods must go before new stock arrives and items out of regular sizes will be sold regardless of cost. An old ladies sale features deep discounts.

Novik hole in after port side. Retvizan on the beach with bottom fallen out. Pallada torpedoed abaft engine room. Cesarevitch docked after torpedoing. Fleet in inner harbor. forts reinforced. Eyewitnesses say 18 dead landed. Admiral Stark blamed for failure to repel attack. Novik did effective work sinking two and capturing one torpedo boats. Wenchow carried 400 Japanese refugees. water supplies scant. Refugees and residents flee. Japanese refugees scattered.
Tokio reports the mobilization progressing with energy and precision. Main railways cut schedules to move troops while reserves occupy vacated garrisons. War bonds open for 100 million yen with March 10 close. Japan shows confidence in two years of sustained war effort.
Tokyo reports no today update on the Vladivostok squadron. It remains unknown if the force returned to Vladivostok or entered the Pacific. Unverified sightings of a foreign warship off a naval station add to the uncertainty while Tokyo’s leaders express confidence in soon ruling the sea.

Associated Press dispatch from St. Petersburg relays an unofficial Port Arthur battle account dated Feb 9. A Japanese squadron shelled Port Arthur for 40 minutes, retiring after our first strong fire. several Japanese ships were damaged or sunk and two officers and six sailors were killed or wounded. Forts reported minor injuries and no landings on the peninsula, with repairs proceeding swiftly. The army and navy mood was calm and bulletins helped soothe the population.
During a heavy southeasterly snow storm the Boston fishing schooner Irene and May ran ashore near the Wood End harbor entrance at Provincetown. The vessel was not badly damaged and is expected to be saved as Wood End life savers assist the fishermen. A southeast gale and thick snow hinder bearings toward the harbor. Two tugs with barges seek shelter in Provincetown harbor.
