The Holland American Line steamer Veendam struck a submerged wreck on February 6 and quickly filled with water, sinking within hours. She carried 130 passengers and 90 crew, all of whom were saved by the American Line steamer St Louis and brought to New York. The Veendam had previously been the Baltic of the Cunard Line.
