A massive Paterson fire reduced the business center, with losses pegged near 8 million. insurance estimates vary, banks reopen in temporary quarters, and relief efforts mobilize as militiamen and police guard the ruins. Dozens injured, two deaths reported. residents receive outside aid and plan restoral of commerce.
A local retailer offers a couple hundred pairs of five dollar trousers at three dollars each due to late season and low profit margins. The selection includes a dozen patterns in fancy worsteds and ceviots, all new, well made and good fitting. Soft hats are also displayed in the front window inviting customers to view.

Anne Tully, 78, widow, living at No 7 Hennessey's court, was found frozen in the city street near Market street early this morning. She fainted while entering her house, doctors gave all aid, but she died at St. John's hospital at 8:39. Police note no marks of violence and her death is attributed to exposure. She had a son on Market street and depended on city support.
Rev. William D. Joyce OMI pastor of Immaculate Conception church died a year ago. This morning at 9 oclock an anniversary requiem mass for his repose was celebrated in the Immaculate Conception church. A large congregation attended with Schmidt's Requiem Mass sung by the choir. Numerous clergymen present from Lowell and nearby parishes attended in the sanctuary.
The appropriations committee will hold its second meeting tonight and start its work on the estimates. William Meloy, the mayor’s private secretary, prepared the department figures after hours. Five new diphtheria cases were reported Sunday and three more this morning. No steps yet to recover the late city farm superintendent’s salary.

William Traversy of Farrell and Conaton's block in Dutton Street fell down stairs Sunday night around eight o clock. He was unconscious for hours and taken to St John’s Hospital by ambulance. Doctors diagnosed concussion with no fracture. consciousness returned within hours and he is expected to return to work in a few days.
Congressman Knox is at his home in Andover for a brief visit. He told a reporter his trip was wholly for private business and has no connection with any rumored change in the site chosen for the new post office in Lawrence. He said he has no knowledge of such a change and is in excellent health.
The committee on education will visit Lowell this afternoon arriving about 4 o'clock. They will tour the textile school and then the new school building under construction. No formal programme is set and it is unclear if other Lowell spots will be visited.
