A Dracut gathering at Hillside church sought public opinion on annexing part of the Navy Yard to Lowell. Despite delays, eleven attendees including six property holders and two poll tax payers met, with sentiment about evenly split. The meeting adjourned to next Wednesday night.
The Ladies A society of the Methodist church reports a net balance of 67 dollars from a recent entertainment. An additional 30.64 dollars from Rod and Gun club members brings the total to 97.64 to date. The Graniteville Rod and Gun club lists officers and members while residents push for a new church bell and local improvement.
Sixty women, members of the Ladies Aid Society of the Dracut Centre Congregational church, gathered at Mrs Bert Smithson’s home for dinner. It was the largest attendance in years. Plans for the annual fair on the 16th and 17th were discussed. Reports of progress were shared, followed by a social with vocal and instrumental solos.
The Woman s Missionary society of the Congregational church met at Mrs. Spaulding s home with twenty six attendees. The program covered China with pictures of Chinese gods, a talk on religious calls in English speaking nations, and a sketch urging more women graduates into missions. A display of Chinese water color paintings circulated. a letter from Mrs. Goodwich in China was read. Refreshments followed. A baby boy was born yesterday morning at the Gerrish home on Main street. Treewarden Richardson and two assistants began work in the center area.
The village officials push immediate action to remove caterpillar nests from trees. The selectmen and treewarden insist on starting at once while nests are visible. The Grange plans a regular meeting Friday night at Grange hall. Funeral services for Mrs. Elmore Dane were held yesterday at her home near the Andover line, with burial in Centre cemetery.
In Chelmsford the Unitarian vestry hosted a large social with a supper menu of salads cold meats baked beans cucumbers pickles and assorted pies and cake enjoyed by about 150 attendees. An 8 pm program featured Miss Celia Richardson's class readings Rev. A D K Shurtleff on his European trip and musical numbers by Miss Marion Adams William Adams Helen Lord Helen Knowlton and Miss Susan McFarlin’s group.

In Billerica the theft of two thousand feet of copper trolley wire is reported, with a recent seizure near Pinehurst park and a rescued 500 feet by Lowell police from the Lowell and Boston Street railway. The town also covers a box party by the Lend-a-Hand club, church suppers, a Lincoln birthday program, a sleigh ride to Carlisle for a cavalry ball, Women’s Alliance meeting with national president Emma C. Law, a postponed Ladies Whist club event, and an illness update on John Fish battling pneumonia.
Constantinople February 9 The Franco Turkish dispute appears to to be settled by a compromise with France securing a share of new guns for Turkish artillery. Ambassador Con stans influence prompts Tewfik Pasha to submit fresh proposals under which Germany funds pay Krupps arrears and part of the new batteries while the Ottoman bank loan finances the rest. France would buy the remainder of the guns and the Syrian railway issue would also be resolved to satisfy French demands.
Boston February 9 General Nelson A Miles issues a statement denying allegations his actions to imprison Jefferson Davis were for humiliation or personal gain He asserts official action was authorized by the highest authorities and approved by superiors and the government He notes the absence of living officials who could counter the vituperation and emphasizes they acted in good faith for the country.
In Sacramento California on February notes Joseph S. Jordan testified in the senatorial bribery investigation that he acted as agent for four accused senators. He said he was employed by Clarence Grande of the Phoenix Building and Loan and admitted delivering rolls of 350 dollars to several senators to secure protection in ongoing probes.
In North Billerica voters face a town meeting warrant article seeking 2900 more for a 950th anniversary celebration, beyond 500 already approved. Roger Barrington canvasses residents, claiming two thirds oppose the extra appropriation and arguing the town should not bear the added cost if a creditable event cannot be funded.
Danforth lodge Knights of Pythias held installation at Union hall with District Deputy Arnold of Wakefield presiding. Officers installed included C C Charles F. Manning W C Herbert S. Men’s Social union meeting set for North Billerica Baptist vestry tonight.
A fine display of Venice pictures runs in the reading room of the libre. A little daughter brought happiness to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hynes on February 2. Cc. E. day exercises were held at the Congregational church Sunday evening with Miss Susie Davis in charge. Mr. Arthur West sang a solo as the choir offered three selections. At the Unitariu church Miss Ellen Gammage led the Y. P. U. service in the evening.
Mr Charles Burgess of Delaware visits his sister Miss Emma Burgess. The Dux Christus club allied with the Congregational church will meet at Mrs F E Varney next Tuesday Feb 14 with Rev A F Earnshaw of Chelmsford as speaker. Mr George Y Hodge is ill with quincy sore throat.
The west bound Southwestern Limited from New York City jumped the track at St Johnsville at about 6 PM while traveling at high speed. Every car left the rails and ran a quarter mile on the ground before stopping. Passengers were badly shaken but no serious injuries reported as tracks remained blocked for hours. Locomotive stayed on the rails.
