Fr Joyce a prominent Lowell priest born in Ireland pursued Oblate formation in England and Ireland then Canada. He served Immaculate Conception and Sacred Heart parishes, built Columbus park and the Grey Nuns convent, led parish sodality and Holy Name society, and prioritized spiritual guidance over material projects. He organized schools, expanded church enclosures, provided Y M C L quarters, and enriched church interiors. He died after a life devoted to parish welfare.

Mary E Holt, 88, was arrested by police inspectors for larceny of a gold watch valued at 85 from Michael Mene, 65 or older. Mene, in Williams Street house, attempted a stunt with four women, losing the watch which was later sold for 5. Holt denies taking the property and has a living husband in Methuen.
The session of the police court was brief this morning with six drunks. Albert Stith paid a $2 fine, Alfred Mangeiuu and Harry Mitchell were fined $6, Leonard Plood was jailed for 15 days, Patrick Royal received a suspended sentence to the State farm, and Frank Knappa also received a suspended sentence to jail.
Wallace N Williams a 15 or 16 year old runner in the Hamilton mills counting room was arrested by Corporation Inspector Noyes on larceny charges. He allegedly took several dollars from the stamp drawer and later from coats of office employees. A piece of marked money was found during a search. Williams admitted the first theft but denied the later act, saying he moved with boys who spent more money than he earned. His arrest drew regret from corporation officials due to his previously good reputation and his father’s standing.

Staples and Thomas supported abolition in the affirmative while Sweatt and Sullivan opposed it. The debate was well attended and enjoyed.
