The state G A R encampment in Boston Tuesday elected officers with a Bartlett Pair. A lighthearted line suggests Uncle Sam and a cautious Senate. The casual tone notes political and social quips from the era.
At noon a catastrophe was narrowly averted as about ten tons of trusses and iron girders collapsed in Huntington Hall. Thirty workers from Boston and Maine rail yard crews were below or nearby. they had just vacated the area minutes earlier, avoiding deadly injury. The falling timbers, many 10x10 or 12x12, and iron braces, crashed with a thunderous roar, trapping none of the men who had just left.
Historian H H C Bingham presents the tale of Empress Josephine at Odd Fellows hall on Saturday evening February 12. Portraits and masterworks will be displayed on screen with scenes of her era. tickets cost 50 and 35 cents at C W Durant’s corner Central and Middle Streets.

Dense fog blankets New York delaying vessels and trains with several elevated line collisions and injuries. William T. True is introduced as the new superintendent of public buildings, age 30, born in Lowell, with prior contractor and business experience and a family.
St Louis on February 9 reports that Isaac B Potter's friends predict a 214 vote total for the presidency of the L A W, well ahead of the 170 needed to secure election. The tally reflects strong support from Potter's allies in St. Louis and surrounding areas.
A crowded police court morning saw many assault and battery cases and few drunks. Peter Clairs and James Algernon, Market street toughs, held on $400 bonds to Feb 19 for assault on Officer Lennon. Greenhalge, a mill worker, fined $20 or three months for December assault on Samuel Fish after pay dispute, with prior records. Cosgrove Dribe Keough cases continued, Wentworth’s disorderly house case adjourned, Hill’s snow shovel offense set for Feb 16.
Mrs. Nettie M Ames reports her Nashua trip led to a burglary at 25 Lamb Street with many women’s garments taken and intruders occupying her bed. Neighbors recall a light January 27 but inspectors have no suspect. Adolphus Baron notes $25 stolen from 11 rear Perkins Street. his missing brother is suspected after a false alarm about a relative’s illness. A bureau drawer was pried open, and cash disappeared.
Samuel Gompers of Washington D C and AFL president spoke in Lowell to a crowded Burkes hall amid hisses and cries of throw him out. He defended calm debate on wage cuts and union affiliation while noting mills face a 10 percent reduction. Gompers urged steady action and highlighted wage and hour contrasts between regions.
Nashua Cycle Club selects riders for the second contest against Spindle City Wheelmen in this city on February 17. Whist entries include T. E. McAfee A. E. DeWolfe Co. T. Cornish and possibly Frank Hayes. Pedro entries list A. E. Dixon D. Colburn B. L. Fletcher and George Dane. Pool entrants are J. F. Bixby Dr. C. S. Valcour Emile Landry and F. 44 Thompson.
The entertainment that was to have been given last week Wednesday, but was postponed, will be given this evening. Tickets are good for this date.

It praises courtesy shown by state representative Mr Conley and city committee members, urges mutual influence, and recalls the history of training school admissions, terms, and pay to explain the recent extension of the practice term.

Thomas C Johnson of Charles street discharged from St Johns hospital after four weeks illness. Frank A Daly of Hiram Ricker s Sons visits Lowell from New York. Miss Kitson and party leave for St Augustine Florida for two months. Emily Battles Coburn s at home event at 25 Mt Washington street attended by many guests.

Taggart dies aged 80 with service at Talbot Memorial Lowell Cemetery Friday 10 am. Richmond widow Annie dies aged 77 with funeral Friday at 2 30 pm private burial. Mylott Ellen 28 and Lizzie F. Dacey also noted as deceased in February listings.
Lowell newspaper men are requested to meet in the parlors of the American House at 4 o clock tomorrow afternoon to discuss the recent death of their fellow worker Frank Owen.
A city convention of the Irish societies will be held at Hibernian hall next Sunday afternoon to arrange observance of St Patrick's Day. About 40 youths from John street church gathered at Fred Evans's house on School street last night and Miss Gertrude Gregg won a doll in a floral love tale contest after supper.
