Woonsocket Rhode Island February 4. A broad shutdown of the rubber industry appears likely with many mills restricting operation and others to close indefinitely beginning Saturday.
The Queen Regent in Madrid signed the plan for reforms in Cuba today. The full text could not be obtained at the moment.
Griswold Iowa February 4 The First National Bank here failed this morning with liabilities of eighty thousand dollars.
The Bombay plague update on February 4 shows 5100 total cases and 3841 deaths.
At a Boston Board of Education meeting Frank Coburn principal of Lowell High School was chosen for a similar post at the state normal school in Boston. If he accepts he will stay at Lowell High through year end. The normal may open in October and the salary will be at least $3000.
The Whatso ever circle of King's Daughters held its annual meeting in the vestry with a supper hosted by Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Page. Mrs. C. W. Huntington and Miss Grace Redliff served, followed by music and a social hour. Officers elected for the coming year include President Mrs. F. R. Woodward, Secretary Mrs. William Robertson, and Treasurer Belle Whittet. The circle spent 116.42 on missionary work during the year.
On February 4 the Police court tackled one neglect of wife case, one assault and battery case, and six drunken cases. Martin Curry was sent to jail in default of a $300 bond and his assault on Thomas Nugent case was continued to February 9. Michael Sullivan’s neglect of child case was filed. Drunks Catherine Buchanan, Robert Hendy, and Peter Burns were continued on probation to March 4. Joseph Lesage received six months at the state farm. Bernard Moffatt fined $5. Martin Curry remained in jail with a $200 bond to February 9.
The Lowell directory for 1897 has closed its canvass and publishers request all citizens who updated or changed details since the canvasser called, to notify local agents Joshua Merrill & Son at 124 Central Street so corrections can be made before printing begins in a few days.
Revival meetings at Chelmsford Street Free Baptist Church continue with large attendance. Many attendees show evidence of conversion as Rev. Mr. Moulton delivers powerful and convincing sermons. Meeting scheduled for this evening.
W A Bartlett of Lowell commends the local chorus for its high standard of singing and leadership after a Tuesday evening concert. He urges the community to back the Philharmonic club with funds and audience support, noting the value of art for education, morale, and city life, and hopes for a doubled concert run in March.
Under the Channing Fraternity auspices Rev Julian C Jaynes will preach at the Unitarian church next Sunday evening at seven. He leads a large flourishing West Newton church and is regarded as a prominent Unitarian figure. All are welcome and seats are free.
The Overseers of the Poor adjourned meeting debated approving a large bill totaling 14250 including a lands and buildings charge for city farm improvements. They elected Dr C M Frye to replace Dr Mulcahy, and approved various bills while probing charges and procedure, adjourned after lengthy session.
The Lowell Orchestral Society offers a charity style concert with Mrs Helen Winslow Potter performing next Sunday. Prof Borjes will play Airs from the Alps with orchestral accompaniment along with an overture from Marriage of Figaro and other German airs. Tickets are 26 cents, with sales at Ellingwood's drug stores and at the door. Reserved honorary seats available at Ellingwood's after 9 am Friday for Sunday use.
In Boston the Rights of Columbus held a long close vote to fill key posts. Edward L. Hearn won state deputy and William J. O'Brien state secretary, with Timothy Calnan state treasurer and Francis J. Horgan state advocate. Other officers include Thomas Leahy as state warden and Rev. P. B. Murphy as state chaplain, plus James McQuaid as state auditor. Delegates and a Columbus Day committee were also chosen with several city and regional figures named.
The girls employed at St John’s hospital enjoyed a sleigh ride party through the kindness of Sister Bernard. They rode as far as Billerica Centre then spent a social evening at Mrs Rogers’s home before returning.

Three services held this week in Lowell. Mamie E Cronin died recently and was buried in the Catholic cemetery after a 2 AM service at her Dummer Street home and St Patrick Church with Rev Fr Gleason officiating. Thomas F OBrien’s funeral from 50 Marion Street occurred yesterday at 2 30 PM with grave services led by Rev Fr Leonard and Undertaker O'Donnell. Patrick Barry’s funeral from St Patrick’s Church was today at 10 AM with Rev Fr Burke presiding. bearers included local lodge members and Court City F of A delegates. burial followed at the Catholic cemetery managed by Undertaker O'Donnell.
About 150 workers began ice cutting this morning on the Mertée Mack. The ice run is active and a large supply for next summer is assured. Ice measures about 10 inches thick and of excellent quality. Daniel Gage supervises the operation.
