After a severe storm, Lowell and Suburban lines resume service with hundreds working to clear tracks from the business district to the state line. 500 men on the Nashua line, Billerica line opened, Tyngsboro remains closed, and through freights move while mill tracks risk stoppage without quicker clearing.
In his annual address to Columbia University trustees Seth Low said 52 pupils receive scholarships and free tuition. A separate item reports Our Dumb Animals stationed a man at the Dorothea L. Dix fountain in Boston on December 14 to prove horses drink there year round, counting 583 horses that day.
The department of literature will begin a six meeting course next week Thursday on Victorian Poetry. Reading lists include Stedman Arnold Dowden with first two chapters. The executive council met Wednesday as Gov. Wolcott announced nominations including Ira A. Abbott of Haverhill for justice of the Haverhill police court to replace the deceased Carter, Horace E. Bartlett of Haverhill as special justice, Gardner E. Perry of Dedham as trial justice of Norfolk County, William E. Chamberlain of Rutland as medical examiner for the 10th Worcester district, and Joan M. Merriam of Framingham as archives commissioner to succeed Justin Winsor, deceased.
Boston today reports a double train collision at Winter Hill station on the Boston and Maine line. Fifteen people were injured, eight seriously, with one passenger likely to die. The Arlington train plowed into the standing West Medford train, tearing into baggage and smoker cars and throwing passengers to the floor.
A collision between the Arlington train and a train’s tender caused severe injuries to several riders. Eight were rushed to Somerville City Hospital. and others treated at Winter Hill station. Names of the injured from West Somerville, Arlington Heights, and Lexington regions are listed. one incident suggests a hip injury from the front Arlington car.
Seattle reports a Montana cowboy named Milton Fillmore Tanner hanged for a double murder at Valdes Alaska after killing Carl and Lee and wounding two others. A trial by four camp residents led to a rope verdict with 44 voting for hanging. Tanner’s last words questioned the method of execution. Bodies buried at Valdes. the case drew Boston and Lowell ties through the victims and surviving party members.
At a recent meeting of BL F Butler Post A A delegates were instructed to vote at the state encampment to abolish the house of lords formed by past department commanders, reduce the annual assessment from 24 to 16 cents, and oppose a $500 appropriation for department headquarters. The acceptance of Montgomerys history presented to the post was debated and referred to a committee.
Six drunkenness cases were disposed of this morning. Ellen Noonan was sent to the state farm for eight months, while James Daley paid a five dollar fine. Four others paid one dollar each. Cases of Atwood W. Chase and John F. Godet were continued until tomorrow. Allen and Allen cases were further postponed to the 14th.

Dave Petrie a switchman for Boston and Maine had a remarkable rescue after a winter storm. Returning from the Opera house he found a woman in a street drift on Wesford street. He carried her on his back to Lane street after she could go no farther.
An active Wednesday evening gathering in the Young People’s rooms of the First Congregational church formed a Men’s Union. Rev. H. S. Dickson oversaw the proceedings with officers elected including President William W. Richardson and Vice President J. W. Griffin.

Haney W Churchill died in the city on January 31 aged 26. Funeral services will be held at the family home on Coral Street Friday at 2 oclock. Friends are respectfully invited to attend.
A city committee on prints held a meeting last night and voted to approve 109 red books. The city clerk was authorized to compile the material for submission to a public records authority. The exchange included remarks about observers and archivists at the wall.
