William Morrissey faced Judge Hadley on two counts of stealing rides and drunkenness. He pled guilty to drunkenness and was found guilty of taking Louis Harvey's team but not Joseph Jalbert's. Sentenced to five months in Lawrence jail where he is also sought. Drunkenness case placed on file. Other drunks include John Foley and Edward Meehan fined $1. Edwin Coughlin continued on capias. Judge Pickman heard John F. Murphy case. credits indicate prior insanity concern but now sober. finding reserved for Saturday.
Reports from New York and Lowell describe a slip on ice injuring Mrs. Sarah T. Park of South Chelmsford fracturing her hip. James F. McDonald will star tonight in The Telephone Girl, hosted by John J. Dawson. Charles J. Meehan lies seriously ill at 100 Bourne Street. Lowry Manufacturing elected John H. Buttrick as director and later president. Miss Ethel H. Adams becomes amanuensis to A. G. Cumnock of Appleton. C L Boutillier, master mechanic for Massachusetts mills in Georgia, suffers appendicitis in Lindale with expected recovery. A Mercy and Help social at Miss Florence McMaster’s home on Robbins Street charged admission at three cents a foot. Lyceum Orchestra played and refreshments served. Robert Ferris becomes electrician with Tucker & Parer.
Lowell residents are invited to view an exhibition of hand painted china opening today in the Swan building. Boston artist and educator Mrs. Weston lends her reputation to the display, which will remain open for the next three days.
The body of Joseph H. Maxwell was found at seven this morning in his shop show window in Providence Rhode Island. A rubber tube entered his mouth and a gas jet remained open at the other end. The motive for the act is not known.
The steamer Rhynland remains aground on Cotton Patch shoal as passengers are shifted to tugs and will ride to Lewis Delaware, then be brought to Philadelphia on a special train.
New York February 2 The supply ship Solace passed quarantine this morning bound for Manila carrying seven army officers 15 naval cadets and a large quantity of supplies and ammunition for Dewey s fleet and the war effort.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Lee of Richmond Virginia guests of Admiral Dewey in Manila last December say Manila officers and educated locals foresee a gentler shift toward American rule as natives gain understanding. They doubt Filipinos can sustain their own government and warn outside leaders are ignorant tools for selfish schemes risking anarchy.
The Vancouver Chinatown district near the large lumber mills burned completely. Several Chinamen were killed by the blaze after being befuddled by opium. Two men died in the fire, others were severely burned and several were reported missing.

A large piano and organ factory owned by Clough & Warren Co in Detroit burned severely on February 2. Firefighters battled the blaze as the extensive plant appeared headed for total destruction with authorities estimating extensive property loss.
The basement dining room at the high school opened to pupils on Wredhesdae and proved a hit with 250 students dining today. Previously lunch was at a primitive counter near a coal bin, but Principal C W Irish and staff studied the need for better refreshments and now report a model room with a hollow square lunch counter, new stove, and well appointed cupboards.
The Lowell Electric Light corporation held a five hour annual meeting that resulted in a reorganization under Boston syndicate control. The new board favored by the buyers includes Stone Webster officials and lists several Boston and Newton directors, while a minority Lowell faction sought more local representation. The treasurer and clerk were reelected, and the meeting showed heavy proxy participation with 1,557 proxies and 1,915 total shares. The annual treasurer’s report cited 139,355.20 total receipts for the year and 18,000 incandescent lights in use among 390 customers.
Joseph Wilson two years old living at the rear of 22 Middlesex street was severely burned last night when a lamp toppled and ignited nearby cot bed. Taken to St Johns hospital he was feared dying but later reported more comfortable with improved recovery prospects.
Mrs. James Wilson of 628 Beacon Street asserts that James Green, the crew survivor eaten by cannibals in New Guinea, is her brother. Green left Lowell over a year ago for the Klondike and has not been heard from since until reports of his escape. He is a widower with two daughters, one in Broadway, this city, and one in Stoneham. He is 61 and has long sailed the seas.
Stephen Nolan, formerly of Lowell, was struck by a team in Dorchester on Tuesday and died later in a Boston hospital. His remains were transported to Lowell to the home of his sister Mrs Masterson at 17 Pollard Street.

District Attorney Fred N. Wier orders an inquest into the January 17 1899 death of Charles W. Mayotte at the Lowell jail after consultations with Medical Examiner Dr J C Irish and the sheriff Henry G Cushing. Judge S P Hadley will set the date and summon witnesses for the inquest.
John J Hunt longtime assistant instructor of penmanship in Lowell public schools died at his home 172 Pleasant street after a long illness of consumption. He was a leading penmen and a respected teacher who helped raise penmanship standards. He leaves his mother and a sister Sarah. a brother died recently. Alpine club members mourn his passing.
News arrives of the sudden death of Edward B Noyes aged about 23, son of Major EB J Noyes. He died Monday night while prospecting for a ranch at the New Columbia hotel in Shoshone Idaho. He recently left his hometown after visiting his parents and had spent two years in cattle business in the west. He was retiring and modest yet a general favorite among friends. The loss will shock many acquaintances.

Miss Elfreda Leary of Lowell died at Lowell hospital on Tuesday afternoon after a two week illness. She was 25 years old and came from Upper Chelsea Nova Scotia to be buried near kin after funeral services at her brother Calvin Surrey street Brighton at 10 tomorrow. In Lowell she worked as a bookkeeper in the winding department of Lawrence and was active in Fifth Street Baptist church and Centralville Rebekahs. She was noted for elocution and a sunny disposition and leaves many who mourn her untimely death. Also noted are the deaths of Elihu Hunking aged 85 at 574 Stevens Street and Fannie M Cochrane 52 wife of John Cochrane station agent at Merrimack Street depot who died of Brights disease. She was survived by two daughters Maude E Kenneson and Grace D Fraser and by family in Boston.
The funeral of Mrs Minnie Smythe was held yesterday with prayers at home and services at Chelmsford Street Baptist Church officiated by Rev Mr Lockhart. Burial followed in Edson Cemetery with Undertaker Young in charge. Christina E McMasters funeral services were yesterday at her parents home with Rev A E Wilson officiating, burial also in Edson Cemetery under Undertaker Young.
Death notices announce John J. Hunt at 172 Pleasant Street after years as a penmanship teacher. Infant Hugh Gallagher, son of Thomas and Winnie, dies at 104 Lawrence Street. Hithu Hunking, aged 85, passes at 374 Stevens Street.
Canton Pawtucket S O O F held a regular meeting with Brigadier General Emerson of Boston and Captain De Wolfe of Canton Shawmut as guests. After the business session a supper followed and addresses by visitors and locals. Arrangements were made for the annual bell event on February 23 with guests from Lawrence Boston Nashua Newburyport and other cities.
