Boston December 24 Roger Wolcott thrice Governor of Massachusetts was buried at Mt. Auburn after a Trinity church service attended by hundreds of eminent officials and citizens. The coffin was borne by Harvard class of 1870 members. the service had no eulogy. Private burial for next year.
William J. Bryan will respond to Cleveland's criticism of the Democratic party at the Bryan league anniversary banquet in Chicago on January 8, the anniversary of the battle of New Orleans. It will be his first public speech since his second defeat.
Johnnie Nelson of Boston wins against Hardie Downing of San Jose on a celedrome track in Los Angeles. Nelson completes five miles in 8.01 2-5, breaking the world record. The event took place in Los Angeles, California, on December 21.
In New Haven at the Quinipac brewery a beer tank burst, killing Sebastian Joss, 52, instantly. Oak timbers and debris scattered as workers reported the accident. Joss leaves a widow and nine children. The cause remains undetermined.
Edwin H. Knight, a prominent business man, was arrested in South Berwick Maine this morning on charges of murdering Fannie Sprague on May 1.
San Francisco reports Ted Sloan will ride Vesuvian at Tanforan the next day after the Dec 4 update.

The Steamer Puritan of the Fall River line arrived at Fall River with a broken shaft after a trip from New York. Passengers and freight were discharged, repairs will be made at Newport, and it is unlikely to resume service before next spring. The Priscilla, hauled off earlier, will replace the Puritan.
A Lowell resident calls TosSano the greatest cold and sore throat remedy seen, recounting rapid relief after a single teaspoon and subsequent purchase. The ad notes Hood's Sarsaparilla also outperforms rivals, with TosSano priced at 50 cents and soon sold by every local druggist.

Stearns’ vespers at evening service include Magnificat, Alma Redemptoris by Lambillotte, Adeste Fideles by Dressler, Ave Marie by Gounod, sung by Miss Nita Goddu with Goeb’s Tantum Ergo. Choir of fifty voices directed by Dr. G E Caisse, Miss Alma Alexander at the organ.
At ten o clock morning mass by Vic tor Hammerer the Kyrie Gloria Credo Sanctus Agnus offertory Exultation are sung in plain Gregorian chant. A choir of 75 voices directed by H A Racicot accompanies with B Vincelette on organ. Gregoire's orchestra will assist at the service.
The program lists solo and ensemble pieces for a solemn high Mass with organ and orchestra, including Mozart Magnificat and Dixit Dominus, with Mase Haydn and Gounod offerings, performed by Hibbard's orchestra under M J Johnson and BE Faulkner as director and organist at St. Joan's Church.
Nine men charged for first time with drunkenness were freed by Judge Hadley as a Christmas gesture after recommendations by Inspector Donaldson and Probation Officer Slattery. Several defendants could not pay fines, and others received probation or minor sentences while others faced jail or reform farm terms.

Among candidates for member of the board of regretrars of voters to succeed Representative-elect Piward Cheney, Albert Bingen, a French American who has served as police court interpreter and as a teacher in the Green evening school, Cheney is expected to tender his resignation before the next election of the Legislature.
Mr John W Bowker of this city marries Miss Mabel Annie Longbottom at the bride’s home in tranquil Ville. Rev J A Day officiates with Walter Longbottom and Alice Bowker as best man and bridesmaid respectively. A reception and breakfast followed. decorations by A L Field. The couple will reside at 125 D Street after February 1. No cards.
Miss Sarah J Ogley married Jesse Whitworth at 297 Thorndike street in a ceremony attended by friends from Lowell New Bedford Lawrence and Franklin. Rev N W Matthews officiated with Mrs Osman Long on piano. Ernest Whitworth served as best man and Emma Ogley as bridesmaid. The couple plans a brief wedding tour before settling on Robinson street.

Asa Packard, 17, son of Robert Packard, who ran away from home about four months ago, has written from Lowell saying he will return once he collects due money. Parents relieved to learn he is alive and well. The note mentions another boy named Halpin who accompanied him, but Asa’s letter makes no reference to him, suggesting they may not have remained together.
