Washington December 23 Gov Crane of Massachusetts declined the Treasury portfolio tendered by President Roosevelt last Friday. Officials said he did so for business and domestic reasons, announced from the White House.
In Rome the Pope received the cardinals and offered Christmas greetings. He delivered a long address condemning excessive liberty of thought, criticizing socialism, agitation for divorce, and church divisions, and urged unity among Christian churches.
James Parker the negro giant said to have seized Czolgosz will become a Senate messenger with a salary of 1440 dollars annually. Senators Hanna and Mason, with Secretary Cortelyou, arranged the post to be created from patronage. Parker will arrive this week and begin duties when the Senate reconvenes after holidays.
In Biddeford municipal court Eugene Bille charged with assault with intent to kill on Napoleon Souci had case continued to next Friday at defense counsel's request. Bille released on bail. Rev. W. J. Stanton S. J. named to preach Christmas Day sermon in St Patrick's Cathedral New York City. Stanton is a Jesuit missionary and brother of Mrs Lawrence Cummings of Biddeford.

In Rochester New York on December 23 four burglars blew open the brighton post office safe stealing about 100 in money and 200 in stamps. Mrs Sylvester Downs nearby was fired upon but unharmed as the robbers fled into the night. No clues to their identity.
The United States transport McClellan arrived in New York from Manila with 38 cabin passengers and 242 soldiers for the Philippines. Among the crew were Col. C A Dempsey and Majors Wygant Maklin Lawton Threlkeld and Stephens. Two deaths occurred en route, Captain Herbert Draper and civilian clerk William B Tabb. Eight officers left at Port Said for a European tour, and the voyage covered 25 757 miles with stormy seas and heavy rain squalls from Suez to Bermuda.
In Huntington West Virginia during a family quarrel at Central City William Lafferty was shot and seriously wounded by his son Burt Lafferty. The elder man seized a shotgun and fired at Burt as he fled wounding Rebecca Lafferty, another daughter. Lafferty was captured by officers and jailed. Neighbors say the father had been abusing his wife prior to the incident.

The third quarterly conference of Highland M E Church met Sunday night with Rev J H Mansfield presiding. A L Gray served as secretary and reports praised church progress. The church unanimously voted to keep Rev George M Smiley as pastor for a third year. The pastor and his wife were thanked for their service. A request urged Rev Edmund L Smiley, presently a local preacher at Bloomfield VI, to join the conference next year so he may study at Boston University.
Gontaro Ohdaki, chief engineer of the Imperial Japanese navy, has arrived on the Celtic en route to Japan via San Francisco. He toured Europe on state business and studied submarine navigation developments for Japan. He previously served as chief engineer on the battleship Furo during the China-Japan war and was promoted for his service.
Lynn December 23 The American Express Co employees plan to continue work at least until noon awaiting promised settlement terms from General Manager Juliet of the eastern division. London reports Sir Joseph Henry Gilbert died aged 66. Hamilton Ohio December fire at Champion Coated Paper company plant caused losses estimated at 750000 to 1000000 dollars. The plant, largest of its kind in the U S, employed over 400 people. A can of gasoline exploded in John Kopp s hands, leaving him severely burned and destroying enamel paper stock worth 250000.

A joint conference was held by a YMCA committee and the Young Men’s Catholic Institute of Lowell to organize a whist and pool tournament between the two groups. Committees will be elected by both societies to finalize plans, with a tournament committee to be formed at a YMCA meeting next Sunday.
Providence December 23 Canwell Allen of Brooklyn New York and Stephen H Easton of Central Falls have won the trial match and will represent Brown university in the chess tournament to be held December 31 at the Manhattan Chess Club rooms New York against Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania.
