Hugh M. Campbell of 24 Webster street Medford died by hanging Friday night at his home. Despondency is cited as the cause. His son Hugh Jr. Found the body early Saturday hanging from a banister with a rope around the neck. Campbell, about 65, was a long time member of S. C. Lawrence post G A R Medford.
Lowell Massachusetts December 21 1899 the Five Cent Savings Bank returns to its four percent per annum rate. Trustees at a recent meeting say conditions justify paying the January semi annual dividend of two percent. Indications Boston December 23 forecast cloudy weather for Massachusetts with variable winds.
Field Marshal Lord Roberts left Waterloo station today to take command in South Africa. A vast London crowd cheered him and his family as dignitaries and officials pressed forward. The departure was hailed as ensuring thorough, well planned actions in South Africa amid strong national support.
New Orleans reports the All-American baseball team will depart soon for a two month stay on Cuba’s island. The squad includes players from the National and minor leagues, with one exception.
Hundreds of telegrams and messages of condolence arrive for D. L. Moody’s family from across the country and Europe as the Moody funeral plans are announced for Monday afternoon in East Northfield.
Attleboro December 23 thieves raided Mansfield stealing two wagon loads of clothing and small articles and cash from several stores. The town has no patrol and authorities report no clues as yet.
A warrant was issued for the arrest of Charles H. Cole former president of the Globe National Bank by U S Commissioner Wisk in Boston on December 23. The action follows investigations into his conduct while leading the bank and seeks accountability for alleged financial irregularities.
A Baswell coal works explosion near Brownsville Pennsylvania entombs sixty miners this morning. Officials report rescue teams were dispatched and the fate of the workers remained uncertain as the mine faces extensive damage and continued dangers.
Natick December 22 Medical Examiner Adams and Drs Bancroft and Cocrane performed an autopsy on Lewis Perry who was shot and killed at Miss Lizzie Morse's West Natick home the previous afternoon The bullet pierced the heart while a slanting wound appeared in the left side The stomach indicated Perry drank liquor shortly before death The 22 calibre revolver bullet did not touch flesh Miss Morse a prisoner admitted to shooting Perry while he attempted to force entry She posted 2500 bail for appearance before Judge Mulligan tomorrow morning Arnold Stappen also held on 2500 bail He will have a hearing with Morse The Natick residents blame Perry and Stappen for excessive liquor consumption Great sympathy for Morse
In Quincy Illinois on December 22 a gas jet ignited during a St Francis school Christmas rehearsal causing a blaze that killed six girls and badly burned four others. Four survivors were expected to die. Names of the dead include Mary Wavering Alma Maddendorf Bertha Freund Jose Roszewos Miss Hickey Irene Freiburg. The injured include Josephine Bohne Wilhelmina Cotten dorf Lena Zelger aura Manke and several nuns and a priest.
A Polish man, intoxicated after returning from Lawrence, fell at his home on 86 William Street and sustained a concussion. He remained unconscious at St. John’s Hospital with poor prospects of recovery. Police found no evidence of foul play. An operation may be needed if condition does not improve.
The Iron Moulders union hosted its third dance at Associate hall last night. About sixty couples danced to Hibbard's orchestra, continuing late. Officers included General manager James T. Murphy and chairman George H. Keating among others.
Hibernian hall hosted the Emerald association social and dance with about five couples on the floor. Officers managing the affair included General manager Patrick Fitzgerald and floor director John Fahey, with a large reception committee led by Michael Sullivan and Michael McMahon.

The testimonial cites Hood's Sarsaparilla as a grand blood purifier and claims personal benefit alongside Hood's Pills from Mrs F G Smith of Cleburne Texas and Miss Nellie Hilenbrandt of Rochester New York.
The American house in Boston hosted Rev C E Davis urging lifting the ban on theatre going card playing and dancing, prompting debate among local Methodist pastors. Liquor inspectors found seven full bottles and seventeen empties at Harrington s saloon and he paid a $100 fine. Gilman and Litman faced charges for illegal liquor keeping with ten full bottles found and two cases of empties. they were held on $300 and later pleaded guilty with Bach fined sixty dollars. Byrne pleaded guilty to maintaining a liquor nuisance and paid a $50 fine after an appeal. Doyle was jailed six months for larceny after taking a horse and wagon and selling them. Other defendants, Waits, McMahon, Powers, and Souza received fines or delays. Souza s case involved hospital time and a possible pardon.
Mayor Crowley seals himself in city hall to draft his inaugural speech and avoid disturbance. Inspector MeBtholm clarifies monthly reports while planning an annual department showcase. A clerk is to join the inspector’s office next week as council prepares salary action and year-end closes. The water department starts drilling new wells after removing old test wells as politics and bills loom in city hall. Charles W Bell denies plans to challenge Cadman for city clerk as ordinance committee refers pending measures to the new council.
The J C Ayer Co pay master delivered cash Christmas gifts to all employees. Treasurer Rose announced the company’s gift equals 10 percent of each worker’s monthly stipend, a holiday surprise for every staff member.

Lawrence Pagle reports a man in town Wednesday used counterfeit five dollar notes with one side reading five and the other side one. Two fakes are known to have passed, others may have circulated. The suspect fled before detection and police have no leads at this time.

Mr Charles H Hooke cashier of the Globe bank of Boston is a Lowell man with many friends here who wish him clear sailing through the bank’s troubles. Mrs J C Hamilton has been at Dunstable the past four weeks. Alfred Watson and George P Booth roid two young Englishmen with the U S Bunting company in Lowell have left for England to enlist in the South African war. Blanche Ames of Lowell becomes engaged to Mr Oakes Ames of Boston. Frank Rawnsley receives a plush case with a gold pen and pencil as a token of esteem from the U S Bunting drawing room women.
A large stock of heavy 8x9 lbs horse blankets marked 3 dollars is being sold at 1.89 dollars each. They are advertised as worth 4 dollars at regular dealers. Also noted are skates in varying varieties at Thompson Hardware Co. Dr. Livingston reports no material change in the smallpox patient today, with tomorrow seen as a potential turning point.
