His commando, aided by a few followers, penetrated the line and left behind a fifteen pounder and ammunition in British hands. Haasbroek’s unit and two guns failed to pass Springkant's Nek, suffering forty casualties.
In Gorham New Hampshire a serious rear end collision on the Grand Trunk line killed Leo Johnson a brakeman from North Stratford. Two engines of the rear train were demolished and the forward train caboose wrecked. Johnson was asleep in the caboose and could not escape. Traffic will be blocked all day. It is the tenth Grand Trunk accident on this branch in two weeks with others only minor.
A major blaze hit the Brown Hoisting and Conveying Co plant in Cleveland this morning, threatening to destroy seven buildings with valuable patterns and machinery. By dusk five of the seven buildings were ashes, with damages exceeding half a million dollars and about eleven hundred workers left unemployed. The firm was one of the world’s largest in its field and held many government contracts for new coaling stations.

Advices from Manila state American troops push westward with detachments of the 6th 7th and 18th regiments active near stations. Insurgent losses include five killed and several wounded. Americans suffer two killed and three wounded. Natives pledge allegiance to the United States as hostilities continue in Panay and southern Luzon with arrests and captures noted. General Wheaton cites 699 natives registered at Caloocan.
Democrats seek to oust Councilman elect Louis Lebrun of ward 7 by claiming his name is Brown and that a writ of ouster could unseat him. The plan hinges on law and a joint ballot to tip the city council. Lebrun, French speaking and married to a Canadian, has served on the council after a hard fought victory.
A long abandoned red schoolhouse at the Coburn mission near Varnum Avenue in Pawtucketville has been renovated for religious services. A committee from the Pawtucket church Endeavor society led local and visiting parishioners to restore the building, add a tower, furnish a library, and install a bell for Sunday services, prayer meetings, and school and fire alarm uses.
A large funeral for street department head Cleveland J. Cheney gathered hundreds including Mayor Crowley and city officials. Clergy led services at Paige Street Free Baptist church and Edson cemetery with choirs, prayers, and reflections on Cheney’s generous nature. Bearers included ex-Alderman Tuttle and city engineers as floral tributes flooded the scene.

At 63 Lakeview Avenue on Saturday evening Mrs Annie Riley about 40 lives at that address. She was badly burned when a candle left burning on a chair near her bed ignited bed clothing and filled the room with smoke. She escaped the flames and was taken to St Johns hospital by ambulance. Firemen extinguished the blaze at box 46 before major damage.

William E Smiley alias Professor Edwards, who sold 50 cent palm readings, was arrested by Inspector Allen on larceny charges. He pleaded not guilty and is held on 200 bond with case continued to Friday. Readings included warnings of plots against him and a claim of future danger. Edwards operated from 88 Bridge Street with a companion Cheryl Cecilia also named. Authorities found permits purportedly signed by Stamford and Norwalk mayors allowing Palmistry at designated sites. Other cases involved brandy drops sold to minors, a Brooklyn sailor intoxicated at the station, and various court actions including fines and probation.

The Democratic executive committee has called caucuses for December 3 to elect a new city committee.
