Weavers Strike Paralyzes Two New Bedford Mills
In New Bedford on December 9, about 500 weavers from the Acushnet and Hathaway mills join a loom fixers strike now in its third week. The walkout risks halting both plants and affects more than 2,000 workers. The action follows pay disputes over Northrup loom management and a stoppage pay system. The local union is financially robust, but no settlement is seen soon as labor leaders push for higher pay while treasurer Knowles resists union talks.
